Memorial Day is often treated as the unofficial start of summer — cookouts, lake days, pool openings, and a much-needed long weekend.

But the heart of the holiday is much deeper than that.
Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day began as a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and other tributes after the Civil War. It was formally established in 1868 by General John A. Logan, leader of a Union veterans organization.

One of the most meaningful traditions is also one of the easiest to miss:
At 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, Americans are encouraged to pause for one minute for the National Moment of Remembrance — a simple act meant to bring the “memorial” back into Memorial Day.

And if you’ve ever seen red poppies around Memorial Day, there’s meaning there too. The tradition was inspired by the World War I poem In Flanders Fields, and American professor Moina Michael helped turn the red poppy into a symbol of remembrance for those who died in service.

So this weekend, by all means, enjoy the time with family.

Fire up the grill.
Head to the pool.
Soak in the extra day.

But maybe at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, take one quiet minute to remember why we get the day in the first place.
