Prescription drug prices just posted their biggest annual drop in more than 60 years. They fell 3.1% over the past year, the steepest decline since 1963, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Under most-favored-nation drug pricing, 26 drugmakers covering about 90% of brand-name drugs have agreed to match the lowest price paid in other wealthy countries. For decades, Americans paid nearly three times more for the same medicines.
The savings are already showing up. Weight-loss medications that ran over $1,000 a month now start at $149, and seniors on Medicare can get them for $50 a month. Every state Medicaid program is on board, with about $65 billion in projected savings over the next decade.
