If you’re an F-1 student or J-1 exchange visitor, an important policy change takes effect on September 15, 2026.

Individuals who are already in valid F or J status on that date may remain in the United States through the Program End Date listed on their current immigration documents, subject to the new transition rules. During this transition period, F-1 students continue to receive a 60-day grace period after their Program End Date, and J-1 exchange visitors continue to receive a 30-day grace period. No Form I-539 is required simply to receive this transition benefit.

If you have questions about how these changes may affect your status or future travel plans, Zelda Vasquez Law PLLC is here to help you understand your options.

Many people are surprised to learn that lawful permanent residents and U.S. citizens have different rights and responsibilities. While a green card provides the ability to live and work permanently in the United States, citizenship offers additional benefits such as voting rights and a U.S. passport.

Understanding the distinction can help you determine what your next immigration goal may be.
