Worried bankruptcy will ruin your credit forever? The short answer: it can hurt your score at first, but it doesn’t close the door on future borrowing. At Wright Law, we help Wyoming clients understand how Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 affect credit reports, waiting periods for mortgages, and steps to rebuild—so you can make informed choices and start rebuilding sooner.

Key points:
• Chapter 7 may stay on your report up to 10 years; Chapter 13 up to 7 years.
• Many people qualify for car loans or mortgages after meeting lender waiting periods and rebuilding credit by making consistent, on time payments.
• Bankruptcy can stop ongoing damage from missed payments and give you a stable foundation to rebuild.

Bankruptcy Filings Are Rising Across the U.S.

A recent Newsweek article reports that bankruptcy filings across the country have increased by 11.5% over the past year, with some states seeing even larger jumps. Wyoming's numbers spiked by more than 10%, proving that Wyomingites are not immune to the financial pressures driving these trends—rising interest rates, inflation, and lingering pandemic-era debt, putting pressure on households and small businesses alike.

As someone who works closely with individuals facing financial hardship, I see the human side of these statistics. Bankruptcy isn’t just a legal process—it’s often a last resort for people who have exhausted every other option. Most of the people I work with have waited too long, and spent months (sometimes years) paying into debt relief programs when they could have filed Bankruptcy.

I believe that Bankruptcy is a financial tool for everyone. Bankruptcy isn't a surrender to failure - it's a rescue boat when your ship is sinking. What questions do you have about Bankruptcy?

Personal and business bankruptcy filings surged 11.5 percent over the past year, according to new U.S. courts data.
