Earlier this week, Judge Mary S. Scriven received the 2026 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the 11th Circuit, which was presented to her by Chief Judge William H. Pryor Jr. A mentor, judicial trailblazer, public servant, and community leader, Judge Scriven has lived a life and career in service to others. As one colleague noted, she has a living “legacy of decency, dedication, and caring that we as lawyers and judges can all be proud of and in some small manner strive to emulate.” Continually demonstrating the values of professionalism, civility, ethics, and excellence she both inspires and advances the rule of law through her example. bit.ly/AIC_Scriven2026

Judicial Assistants from the The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom kicked off a jam-packed visit in the United States this week. The judicial assistants serve in roles that mirror our judicial system’s law clerks, and their visit is under the umbrella of our Temple Bar Scholarship program. The judicial assistants heard three oral arguments at the Supreme Court of the United States, had a lengthy discussion with Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, and dined with their U.S. counterparts. They also visited the US National Archives, learned about Georgetown Law Supreme Court Institute’s work in preparing advocates for oral argument, and met with numerous federal district and circuit court judges and professors for meaningful conversations about our two legal systems, their challenges, and their enduring critical function in preserving the rule of law.

A great meeting with the Charles Clark American Inn of Court in Jackson, Mississippi! The presentation tackled the difficult issue of “Legal Leadership: When Is It Okay to Speak Out?” and examined the intersection of the First Amendment, professional responsibility, firm interests, and the responsibility of being part of a calling foundational to the rule of law. American Inns of Court Executive Director LTG Joseph B. Berger III, (Ret.) closed with comments about the role of personal values, ethics, and legal leadership play in publicly speaking on critical issues. Thank you to Inn President Charlene Priester for inviting us to visit her Inn for the evening

Great day in Dallas with the American Inns of Court! On February 24, over 30 Inn leaders came together to share best practices on everything from programming to member engagement. Thanks to Anne Paul, CAE, for leading a engaging and productive session.

Later in the day, the Judge Paul Brown and the Curt B. Henderson American Inns of Court co-hosted the annual Joint Meeting of the Dallas/Fort Worth American Inns of Court. 350 Inn members from more than a dozen Inns across North Texas, wearing their favorite game day attire, led a great discussion between Judge Michael J. Truncale and C. Paul Rogers III on the “Field of Play” of how NIL has transformed college sports. Michael C. Smith, Esq. moderated this fascinating topic.

Thanks to all the volunteer leaders who made it happen, especially Andrea Williams McCoy, Janis Cements, Judge Amos L. Mazzant III, and Judge Lance Baxter.

In keeping with this year’s America 250 theme, the annual Northeast Florida Joint Inn meeting, held February 19, explored the history and global impact of the Declaration of Independence. Prior to Harvard Professor David Armitage’s keynote address, pupillage team members portrayed key figures connected to the drafting of the document. From left to right: Judge Laura Lothman Lambert (John Adams); LTG Joseph B. Berger III, (Ret.) (Benjamin Franklin); Justin Aho (Thomas Jefferson); Judge Tatiana Radi Salvador (moderator); Howard Jay Harrington, Esq. (John Dunlap); Daniel G. O’Byrne, Esq. (Tim Matlack); and Laura J. Boeckman, Esq. (Mary Katherine Goddard). Special thanks to Mary Margaret Giannini, Esq. (not pictured), Chester Bedell American Inn of Court Program Manager, for coordinating such an outstanding and engaging program.
