* TRIPLE-R CHALLENGE *

On 4 May 2024 — over the well-worn Triple-R Challenge course in Charlottesville, VA — several newly-minted Judge Advocates undertook the Order of the JAGWAR’s signature three-event endurance test.

With its 4-mile run in under 36 minutes, followed by a rope-climb, and then immediately thereafter a 10-mile ruck march within 2.5 hours, the Triple-R is designed to kickstart a physical training regime that prepares Army lawyers/paralegals for success on the ACFT and in Ranger School.

All of the 4MAY24 participants completed the Challenge… thereby receiving the JAGWAR coin for this early “azimuth check” in a dual professional’s Army JAG Corps career.

The trials and subsequent executions of the Houston Riots have long been considered one of the gravest miscarriages of justice in the American legal system, military or civilian.

In November 2023, the convictions of 110 Black soldiers charged more than a century ago for mutiny, murder and assault in the 1917 Houston Riot were overturned. The 17 soldiers honored Thursday were among 19 executed the day after the trial ended.

“After a thorough review, the [Army Board for Correction of Military Records] has found that these soldiers were wrongly treated because of their race and were not given fair trials,” Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said in a prepared statement when the convictions were overturned. “By setting aside their convictions and granting honorable discharges, the Army is acknowledging past mistakes and setting the record straight.”

New headstones for 17 Black soldiers sentenced to death more than a century ago were unveiled Thursday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio after the Army deemed their trials unfair and granted each an honorable discharge.

😮 Thoughts?

“Next year, the expert soldier, infantryman and field medical badges will be worth 60 points -- double their current value. Yet top fitness scores will be worth 120 points, a 60-point decrease from the current rate for the promotion to sergeant and 25 for staff sergeant.”

The changes go into effect for the June 2023 promotion month.
