512 years ago today Henry VIII was crowned King of England. As a family law attorney, its befitting to pay homage to the man who legitimized divorce, which most people agree is a much better alternative than beheading your spouse 👑

The State Family Law Advisory Committee has issued guidelines for parenting time during the coronavirus outbreak. Here is a good article summarizing how parents should handle parenting time and exchanges during this time:

The Oregon Statewide Family Law Advisory Committee said the goal of its recommendations “is to encourage the parties to follow their parenting plan as closely as possible, as doing so will ensure a level of consistency and stability that is in the children’s best interests.”

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, we are closing our doors this week and working from home. We are checking our office voicemail and emails. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need legal assistance or have concerns about your case. It was a tough decision, but made out of consideration for the safety of our office and clients. You can reach us at (541) 248-3558 or at [email protected]. We are hopeful that we can get back to being in the office and in person appointments soon!

Court Updates:
I know everyone is anxious and concerned about the court process and your cases. As of now, the courts remains open. However, many courts have adjusted dockets and implemented procedures in order to minimize everybody’s exposure and still cover essential dockets that are necessary to protect the safety of people in our community.
Right now, here is the status of the local courts:
Linn County: All jury trials postponed until March 31st
Benton County: All jury trials postponed until April 30th
Marion County: All nontime sensitive trials postponed until April 15th. This includes civil and out of custody criminal trials.
Lane & Polk County: Jurors 60 and older, those who are pregnant, or with underlying health conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes, or who have weakened immune systems can contact the court to reschedule jury duty.
Lincoln County: All civil jury trials, out of custody misdemeanor and nonperson felony trials, traffic court trials and small claims hearings and trials are postponed until after May 1st.
Multnomah County: All civil jury trials, out of custody criminal and family law trials postponed until April 30th as well as many juvenile dependency and delinquency matters.
Many of the courts are implementing procedures for telephonic appearance and certain clerks may be closed to the public (such as the family law facilitator). Please check the court's websites and contact your attorney as things are constantly in flux right now. I will do my best to keep people updated, while at the same time making sure my own cases are ready that will be proceeding to bench trial since the courts now have the time available to hear them
