We have been receiving many calls from recently terminated employees needing legal representation for unemployment claims. Our firm continues to represent terminated unemployees in unemployment insurance claims even though the department of labor must approve our bill before we get paid and routinely downward adjusts our bill. I have been told by many unemployed callers that no attorney would take their case. The reason for that is because it is not cost-effective for them to take the case. The purpose of this oversight was to make legal representation affordable for the unemployed instead it has ensured that the unemployed are less likely to attain representation. Why doesn't the department oversee and approve the bills of the Employer's attorney or set the same legal fee for both sides?

A new law goes into effect Wednesday that gives adult victims of childhood s*x abuse in New York a one-year period to file lawsuits against their alleged abusers. NPR http://ow.ly/lI5Y50vxV33

The one-year filing period, or look-back window, allows victims to bring cases that used to be beyond the state's statute of limitations that legislators overhauled this year.
