When another driver causes a serious crash, most people assume that driver's insurance will pay for their injuries. In Ohio, though, the state minimum for liability coverage can fall short of what a serious injury can cost, and some motorists carry no insurance at all.

Uninsured and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage is designed for exactly this situation. Many Ohioans have it on their own auto policy without realizing it, and it may help make up the difference when the at-fault driver's policy isn't enough.

If you drive a company vehicle, ask your employer whether that policy includes UM/UIM. Many employers carry high liability limits for the business itself but decline UM/UIM for their employees.

One more thing to know: settling with the at-fault driver's insurer before notifying your own UM/UIM carrier could put your right to additional compensation at risk. The attorneys at Perantinides & Nolan can help you understand what your policy provides and what steps to take.

Proud moment for our team! 🎉⚽

Katerina "Kat" Tsarouhas has been a legal intern at Perantinides & Nolan for three years, working summers, holidays and breaks from her undergraduate studies at Case Western Reserve University. She is also a senior captain for the CWRU Spartans women's soccer team. Kat will graduate from Case this coming May and plans to attend law school after graduation.

Congratulations to Kat on a fantastic performance in a recent match. Her game-winning goal in the 80th minute, a 35-yard strike that gave the Spartans a 1-0 win over Heidelberg, is featured in Spartans Athletics news. Everyone at P&N wishes Kat and the Spartans a successful soccer season!

Before your kids head out the door, make sure they know how to get to school safely, no matter how they are getting there. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

🔵Walking to school? Stick to sidewalks, cross only at crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street, and always walk in a group when possible.

🔵Riding a bike? A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable. Remind students to ride on the right side of the road with traffic, come to a complete stop before crossing, and choose a route with minimal intersections and light traffic.

🔵Taking the bus? Students should stand at least 6 feet back from the curb when waiting for a bus, wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding, and never walk behind or in front of a bus without making eye contact with the driver first.

🔵Getting dropped off? If you drive your child to school, obey school zone speed limits, follow your school's drop-off procedure, and never pass a bus that is loading or unloading children.

🔵Teen drivers? Review the basics of safe driving. This includes, but is not limited to, having all passengers wear seatbelts, putting devices away while driving, and driving the speed limit.
