UC ENTREPRENEURSHIP WEEK SPOTLIGHT:
We are excited to feature a couple of entrepreneurs who have brought their services together in one building in Afton!
Kayla Weeks & Meggen Weeks with This Weeks Projects, Two Sisters Tanning Salon & Meggen L Weeks, PLC!
Kayla and Meggen first became friends in high school. While Meggen attended college at the University of Iowa and Kayla was at Iowa State University, they both came back to work at the Whistle Stop on their breaks. During one of Kayla’s weekends home, she met and started dating Meggen’s brother Anthony. From then on, they were always together. They all moved back closer to home to raise their families even bought/built homes close to each other in Union County. They also decided to purchase the old primary building in Afton to offer their products & services under the same roof at 205 South Douglas Street.
✨ THIS WEEKS PROJECTS
This Weeks Projects started initially as a joke from a friend. Kayla was camping with friends right around the time of COVID, and as they were sitting around, Kayla was sewing masks for her children. A friend jokingly told her it was a good thing she didn’t have a Cricut yet, or she would be starting her own business. That was the first time she thought about making things to sell. She had been running an in-home daycare since her daughter was one, and as her last child was getting ready to be in school full time along with the other daycare kids, she decided it was the perfect opportunity to try something new. She invested in a Cricut, started playing with it, and she never looked back. A good friend helped teach her how to do simple woodworking which grew her love for making signs.
Kayla and her husband Anthony had been talking about buying property in Afton so she would have more room for making and selling crafts and so they would have a place for their kids to go in between school and sports. They knew Meggen was also looking for a space to open up her own law firm closer to home, so they searched for months before finally asking about a property that had been sitting empty for a while. And just like that, they bought the old primary building in Afton! It certainly ended up being more work than originally anticipated, but at the end of the day, the building was saved and brought back to life. Anthony's talent helped turn this building into Kayla & Meggen's dream spaces.
This Weeks Projects offers antiques and vintage finds, handcrafted signs, boutique and handmade clothing, candles, jewelry, fresh cut flowers in the summer and classes for wreath making.
☀️ TWO SISTERS TANNING SALON
Kayla & Meggen's building has room for multiple businesses, and they decided to expand and offer a service that was needed in Afton. Two Sister’s Tanning Salon offers a relaxing environment that features two brand new lay-down beds as well as a wide variety of lotions and eye protection.
