When was the last time you reviewed the beneficiaries named on your IRAs and insurance policies? Be sure the people named are the ones you want to inherit these accounts! (And perhaps leave a dated note with your personal papers that you made these choices intentionally).

The Wall Street Journal this week had an article about a $1M IRA that had a beneficiary form on record completed 40 years ago, it named a former girlfriend. When it was challenged by his heirs (brothers) the court ruled in her favor. No one will ever know if this was really his intention or an oversight.

As millions of Americans build up sizable workplace retirement assets, disputes over who gets the money are on the rise.
