Doug Wampler lost both his children in a house fire in Dickenson County, VA Friday night. 😔 Charlie was 15, Brooklyn was 13. 💔

As most of you have heard, a dear family in our community lost everything in a house fire last night, including the most tragic loss anyone can go through. A father lost his 2 children. Not only does this family have to navigate starting over, they now have the extremely hard road ahead planning a funeral for his babies. I’m coming to this community asking for any help for this family.

Doug and his family are the kindest souls you will ever meet, and they need our help as a community to come together in this great time of need. All donations will go to the funeral expenses and expenses of starting over with basic necessities: shelter, furniture, appliances, anything they may need in the days ahead.

The American Legion Post 243 in Norton invited me to their Veteran’s Day cook out over the weekend to say a few words honoring my grandfather, Darrell Powers. In my remarks I said that my grandfather was modest and while he did not enjoy the spotlight, the spotlight found him. He would appreciate the American Legion for honoring him, but he would want us to show gratitude and honor all of our Veterans: past, present and future. I brought a copy of his biography, Shifty’s War. Here is a snippet from the book that I hope you’ll enjoy.

The biography is dedicated to the soldiers from Dickenson County who went to war but didn’t make it home. 🇺🇸

As a boy, Darrell “Shifty” Powers’s goal was to become the best rifle shot he could be. His father trained him to listen to the woods, to “see” without his eyes. Little did Shifty know his finely-tuned skills would one day save his life—and the lives of his fellow paratroopers.

As one of the original men who trained at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, Shifty was one out of only two soldiers in Easy Company to initially earn the coveted expert marksman designation. He parachuted into France on D-day and fought for a month in Normandy; eighty days in Holland; thirty-nine in the harshly cold winter of Bastogne; and for nearly thirty more near Haguenau, France, and the Ruhr pocket in Germany.

Shifty’s War is a tale of heroism and adventure, of a soldier’s blood-filled days fighting his way fromthe shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how one man’s skills as a sharpshooter and engagingly unassuming personality propelled him to a life greater than he could have ever imagined.

This week was busy with Continuing Legal Education and networking with colleagues. ⚖️

Thursday evening, the Virginia Women’s Attorney’s Association hosted the local bar and our VSB president at Squabble State in Bristol. ☀️

Today we heard a truly captivating presentation by the daughter of the ACLU attorney, Bernard Cohen, on the landmark case of Loving v Virginia. 📰

I presented today on behalf of the VSB Committee for Access to Legal Services and the VSB disciplinary committee. 📢

And we ended the day with The Bristol Boys playing live tunes 😄🎵
