As a personal injury attorney, there's one thing I'd never let anyone do in my car.

Put their feet on the dash.

I know it looks comfortable. I know people do it all the time. But as someone who has seen what happens in accidents, please don't.

When airbags deploy, they do so at over 100 mph. If your feet are on the dash, your legs get forced back into your body on impact. We're talking broken hips, dislocated bones, and a recovery that can take years.

It's not worth it. Keep your feet on the floor.

What you do at the scene of an accident matters more than most people realize. Here are the mistakes I see hurt cases the most:

1. Saying sorry. Even "I'm so sorry" out of instinct can be used as an admission of fault. Keep your mouth shut about fault entirely.

2. Not getting witness statements. Witnesses leave. Get their name and number before anyone drives away; their account of what happened could be everything.

3. Not calling the police. A police report is one of the most important documents in your case. Always call even if the other driver says it's not necessary.

4. Not taking photos. Document everything before vehicles are moved. The scene, the damage, the road conditions, any injuries. Your phone is your best tool in those first minutes.

The decisions you make in the first few minutes after an accident can affect your case for months. Know what to do before it happens.

Here's something a lot of people don't think about until it's too late.

Your own insurance company can work against you.

First-party insurance is when you file a claim with YOUR OWN insurer, not the other driver's. This comes up in uninsured motorist claims, underinsured motorist claims, and property damage claims on your own policy.

And just like the other side's insurance, yours has an interest in paying you as little as possible. I've seen it happen with commercial property claims, auto claims, and everything in between.
