Muko Protection Agency wishes to inform all Kenyan and Ugandan nationals currently in Iraq that our officers will be available in Baghdad starting 5 August 2026.

Our team will be traveling to Iraq primarily to facilitate the repatriation of the body of Shamim Nakalema, who tragically lost her life after suffering severe burns in Iraq. Alongside this humanitarian mission, we remain committed to supporting and protecting migrant workers in need.

During our stay, we will be receiving and handling cases involving labor disputes, unpaid salaries, passport confiscation, abuse, exploitation, human trafficking, legal concerns, and other challenges faced by migrant workers.

Important Warning to Jordanian Families and Ugandans from Muko Protection Agency (MPA):

Ugandan girls please don't go to Jordan it's Illegal we are dealing with hundreds of Ugandans problems there due to the illegal travel (Human trafficking.

We have previously raised concerns regarding the trafficking of domestic workers from Uganda and the reasons behind the high rate of workers running away from employers' homes. In response, the official spokesperson of the Jordanian Ministry of Labour categorically denied our claims without opening any investigation to verify whether our information was accurate or not.

The Ministry’s spokesperson stated that recruitment is being conducted under cooperation agreements between the two countries, similar to arrangements with Ethiopia and the Philippines. He also claimed that domestic workers undergo training programs and that there is ongoing communication with the Ugandan Ministry of Labour. We categorically reject these claims as completely false. Furthermore, when Ghana was mentioned, they refused to discuss the issue and simply stated, “Leave Ghana aside.”

We once again emphasize that the recruitment of domestic workers from Uganda and Ghana is, in reality, a human trafficking operation carried out by a licensed Jordanian recruitment office in cooperation with an African trafficker. The victims of this scheme are both the Jordanian sponsor and the African domestic worker. There are no official agreements between Jordanian recruitment offices and the labour-exporting countries involved. Domestic workers do not undergo any training programs, and many travel using forged documents that are uploaded into a system linking the trafficker, the medical examination center, and the Jordanian Ministry of Labour. The Ministry’s role is limited to issuing work permits and collecting the associated fees.

There are no contracts between Jordanian recruitment agencies and recruitment offices in Uganda or Ghana. Recruitment is conducted illegally, with workers being gathered in rooms and smuggled through airports in exchange for money.

It should also be noted that Jordanian trafficking offices do not pay commissions to their partners in these countries. Instead, the domestic workers themselves are required to pay commissions ranging between USD 700 and USD 1,000. Workers are often instructed to remain with their sponsor for three months before either running away or refusing to continue working.

Additionally, the Memorandum of Understanding between Jordan and Uganda was automatically renewed after its expiration, and there is currently no communication between the two ministries, contrary to what the spokesperson of the Jordanian Ministry of Labour claimed.

We contacted the Jordanian Recruitment Agencies Association and provided them with serious information, including the identities and phone numbers of traffickers and the so-called “Yellow Brokers” involved in these activities. We also informed the Association about serious violations occurring within the sector. They confirmed that they were aware of these practices and stated that their primary concern was only the workers’ health status and ensuring they were free from diseases.

Several months ago, we also provided conclusive evidence to Al-Wakeel News Program. However, the matter was quietly closed without addressing the problem or launching any investigation.

Now, following the temporary suspension of illegal recruitment operations in Uganda due to the Ebola outbreak, another crisis has emerged. Jordanian recruitment offices have shifted their focus to smuggling domestic workers from Ghana. We are speaking about an almost certain runaway rate among Ghanaian workers—estimated at 99.9%. There is a Jordanian-Nigerian network specializing in facilitating the escape of workers from this nationality. Furthermore, many Ghanaian women do not wish to work as domestic workers and instead aspire to obtain other jobs abroad. The only available pathway for many of them is to apply for a domestic worker visa, travel under that category, and then run away after arrival to seek alternative employment. After working abroad for a period of time, they surrender themselves to the authorities and return home using an emergency travel document issued by their embassy or consulate in Jordan, or by the nearest friendly embassy in a neighboring country.

We once again emphasize that the authorities in both Uganda and Ghana prohibit the recruitment and travel of domestic workers to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Accordingly, we warn Jordanian families against recruiting domestic workers from these countries. We also call upon the Jordanian Recruitment Agencies Association to stop the smuggling of workers from Uganda and Ghana and instead work toward signing official Memoranda of Understanding and legally binding agreements that protect the rights of both Jordanian families and domestic workers.

We strongly advise all migrant workers not to run away from their employers or to fall into the hands of individuals who encourage workers to leave their workplaces with promises of better jobs, higher salaries, or easy money.

Many workers who take such actions end up in more dangerous situations, including homelessness, exploitation, human trafficking, abuse, arrest, detention, loss of legal status, or being left stranded without support.
