Justice Abinyo calls for application of Trial Advocacy skills in Court.

The Justice Advocacy Uganda in partnership with Uganda Law Society on Thursday concluded a four-days training of 32 advocates in trial advocacy, at the Commercial Division of the High Court.

The training has, for the last nine years, been hosted by the Commercial Court during the Court Vacation. It aims at equipping advocates with the ability to present factual and legal aspects of their cases persuasively, so as to permit the Court reach a just result.

Judge Susan Abinyo who closed the training urged the advocates to be better practitioners, by applying all the skills they have been equipped with.
β€œI know this training has been more insightful and you won’t walk out the same way you came. As the Judiciary, when you give us what is good, our output is better,” she said.

Adding that the content of the training was fully packaged to cover most of the challenges that some of the young lawyers have always had. She cautioned them not to fall short of standards especially when it comes to formal proof and exparte hearings, which have always been taken for granted.

She further encouraged them to always prepare for court. β€œTrial Advocacy of course begins at the time when you meet your client, not when you come to court,” she advised.

The Court’s Deputy Registrar, HW Juliet Harty Hatanga, said the training will improve their skills in effective management of trials in Court and that after this training, the standard of proceedings are expected to improve.

Ms Linda Alinda -Ikanza, the CEO Justice Advocacy Uganda urged the participants to vie for personal development by doing something different but in line with the legal profession, improve on their networking with relevant senior colleagues as well as help out professional colleagues in court when need arises.
The topics covered during the training included case analysis, briefing and demonstration on submissions, commentary witnesses, examination in chief, commentary witnesses’ preparation, exhibits, cross examination workshops, statement of the case, re-examination briefing, impeachment workshop and professionalism and pro-bono workshop.
Each of the topics would be concluded by a moot court. The local faculty from Justice Advocacy Uganda led by the Chairperson of the Board, Senior Counsel James Ssebugenyi facilitated the training. They were joined by two International Faculty; Jeff Tilden an attorney from Seattle USA and Helene Namisi, the Chairperson of the Nairobi Chapter of the Kenya Law Society.
Each of the participants who completed the training received certificates of completion.

Our has hit the big 5.0. today!
To quote his own words....
"Today I made 50 and I'm grateful to God and the people in my life. I have also learnt many lessons in life that will carry me through the years ahead.

1. I have learnt that God is my foundation, and that without him I'm nothing. I have enough evidence to follow him and walk with him.

2. I have learnt that family is what makes you and that one cannot be trusted if they mistreat their own.

3. I have learnt that many a time friends stick closer than brothers. Others come and go but true ones remain.

4. That the value of a person is not what you see when you meet them, but what has been invested in him or her by God, parents, teachers, friends and life.

5. The most enduring lessons I have learnt in life have often been from painful experiences.

6. IF IT IS TO BE IT IS UP TO ME. These are the best 2 letter words that have governed my life for as long as I can remember and I will still hold on to them in the next phase of my life.

7. That the mark of maturity is overcoming what puffs you up.

8. That what you do to others will come back to you.

9. That keeping grudges is a full time job which is not rewarding.

10. That the best things in life are free.

Thanks for reading and be blessed."

Yesterday our partner & hosted this important talk by 3 Judges from the US, Kenya and Malawi. One of the take ways was advice on how to deal with judicial discourtesy. Remain calm, don't retaliate and remain focused on the case....
E.g. "Thank You My Lord. We have heard (or noted the court's sentiments (or concerns) and we undertake to address them. Going back to the case my Lord....."
