Today, on , we think about what health really looks like for women at the grassroots, especially those who are working while caring for their families.

As these street cleaners share the challenges they face, itโ€™s a reminder that many working mothers, including breastfeeding women, often navigate long hours, limited support, and little space to meet their own health needs. Our work continues to push for environments that recognize, support, and protect womenโ€™s health and dignity as they work. ๐Ÿ’š

Women traders, like many of their counterparts in the informal sector, face a myriad of challenges, both systemic and practical. Many begin their day before sunrise, navigating markets with limited lighting, which not only constrains their productivity but also exposes them to safety risks.

Beyond the marketplace, the lack of reliable lighting at home further limits their ability to carry out essential responsibilities, including supporting their childrenโ€™s education. In the spirit of this yearโ€™s International Womenโ€™s Day theme, โ€œ๐‘ฎ๐’Š๐’—๐’† ๐’•๐’ ๐‘ฎ๐’‚๐’Š๐’,โ€ FIDA-Uganda, under the HER Access-SRHR & SGBV Response project supported by under the leadership of Dr. Paulina Chiwangu, , the Government of Netherlands under the Spotlight Initiative, is investing in women traders at Nakawa Market by providing solar panels to ensure access to reliable lighting. ๐Ÿ’ก

By giving women the tools they need to work safely, extend their trading hours, and better manage their responsibilities at home, this initiative not only improves individual livelihoods but also strengthens families and communities, because when we give to women, we all gain. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ
