Thailand Expats Corner (and those considering a long term stay in the Kingdom): It’s official. Baan Thai has begun submitting applications for the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). To briefly recap, this is for anyone over the age of 20, wanting to work remotely from Thailand or wanting an immersion in Thai culture such as attending Muay Thai or cooking school. You can also use this visa for extended medical treatments. At just 10,000 THB or about $275, this five-year visa, that allows stays for up to 180 days at a time, is quite a bargain. It's also a multiple entry visa, and you can enter and leave Thailand as you please. Upon reentry into the Kingdom you are granted another six month period of stay. This means that if you work remotely for five months or so, leave for a brief holiday in Vietnam, upon reentry you’ll be able to stay in Thailand for another 180 days. You can also extend your initial stay for another 180 days at any Immigration office by paying an extension fee. This means that with your DTV visa you can stay for up to 360 days a year….for five years. Here’s a link to our DTV Service Page to learn more.

Two notes of caution. Please keep track of your stay period as overstays will result in penalties. Also, if you stay in Thailand for more than 180 days during the year, you may find yourself tax domiciled in the Kingdom, paying tax on your foreign income. Now there are double taxation agreements with most Western countries, but this is something to consider as you make you plans.

Finally, and taking a step back, Thailand is now offering a wide variety of long term stay options including Non-O visas, LTR 10 year visas, Non-B visas and of course the new DTV program. Which is right for you will depend on your aspirations in the Kingdom, whether you wish to ever work here or start a business, or if you want to truly immigrate to Thailand and become a permanent resident. Our Thai legal counselors are always happy to have a strategic conversation with you as you figure out your long term plans and balance the costs and benefits of each available visa.

The Email Gateway provider has announced that N-Able Mail Assure and N-able SpamExperts Hosted Cloud in the Asia Pacific and America zones are experiencing issues due to unexpected fiber cable disconnections under the sea. This has affected our Email Gateway service, which serves as the initial filter for sending and receiving emails in the APAC zone, causing some emails to be quarantined.

As a result, engineers have temporarily rerouted email traffic to bypass the Gateway. Once the Gateway issue is resolved, the engineers will notify us immediately.

Thailand just announced on May 28, 2024 about the new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) that aims specifically at digital nomads and remote workers.

It’s a part of new visa promotions to increase Thailand tourism.

With the Destination Thailand Visa, you are allowed to stay in Thailand for up to 180 days per year. The visa is valid for 5 years.

The main requirement is that you need to have financial proof of at least 500,000 baht throughout your stay in Thailand.
