Singapore's first prosecution for tax evasion in the pre-owned luxury watch industry concluded earlier this month, resulting in a 14-month jail sentence and financial penalties exceeding S$1.4 million.

Our criminal defence team led by Mr Mark Hoh represented the business owner in sentencing proceedings.

A key issue in sentencing was balancing the seriousness of multiple tax offences and the substantial tax undercharged against the offender’s full cooperation, restitution and steps taken to regularise the business’ tax affairs.

The case also raised the important question of how consecutive sentences should be calibrated so that the overall sentence remains proportionate.

The case underscores the importance of seeking early legal advice, cooperating with the authorities, making restitution, and taking prompt steps to rectify any breaches.

🚗⚖️ Tougher Traffic Laws Ahead in Singapore

The Government is introducing stronger measures to improve road safety and deter dangerous driving.

Key changes include:
✅ Lowering drink-driving limits
✅ Introducing tougher penalties for offenders
✅ Legislating a new offence of purposeful endangerment to target drivers who deliberately use their vehicles to endanger another person
✅ Making the holding of a mobile phone while driving an offence, even if the mobile phone is not being used.

These proposed amendments reflect Singapore's continued emphasis on deterrence and accountability on the roads. Motorists should stay informed of these changes and exercise greater caution on the roads.
