Our Co-Head of Corporate & Capital Markets Practice, Eu Jin Yang, and Of Counsel, Ben Chester Cheong, have penned a thought-provoking op-ed published on CNA today.

In the piece, they offer thoughtful suggestions for the newly formed review group by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), aimed at revitalising the Singapore Exchange (SGX Group). Their insights focus on positioning Singapore as a preferred listing hub for both regional and global companies.

The path to revitalising the Singapore Exchange lies in making the country a preferred listing venue for regional and global companies, say lawyers Ben Chester Cheong and Yang Eu Jin.

The Debt Collection Act (“Act”) was passed by Parliament on 13 September 2022 following a rise in complaints from the public. With effect from 1 March 2024, all debt collection companies must be licensed to carry out debt collection activities. It will be an offence to do so without a valid licence. Minister of State for Home Affairs Sun Xueling said that the number of Police reports lodged against the conduct of debt collection businesses and debt collectors remained high, with an average of 367 reports lodged each year from 2018 to 2021.

The reports were primarily against debt collection tactics aimed at pressuring debtors into payment by causing public embarrassment and inconvenience to them.

Our Partner Vernon Voon and associate Nethra Kaur explore the key objectives, changes brought about the act, and the implications for corporations with collectable debts, click here to read the article.

Our Partner, Rizwi Wun, was invited to share his expertise as a panelist at an in-person seminar, "Leveraging AI in Legal Practice," organised by LexisNexis.

During the event, Rizwi and fellow panelists explored the opportunities and risks of using AI in legal practice. From enhancing legal workflows to overcoming adoption barriers and navigating crucial ethical considerations such as data privacy and bias, the discussions were both insightful and thought-provoking.

Legal practitioners within the industry come together to exchange ideas, insights, and experiences. Diverse views were exchanged with some, adamant on adopting AI as a practice standard compared to others who were more reticent on over reliance on AI in the practice of law.

It was an opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals and many agreed that such a topic for discussion was very timely.
