Since 1964, EMS Elektronmusikstudion is the centre for Swedish electroacoustic music and sound-art. EMS is run as an independent part of Musikverket/Swedish Performing Arts Agency. Besides making professional studios available for the production of electroacoustic music and sound-art, EMS’ aim is to support artistic development of electroacoustic music and its integration within other artistic areas. EMS represents electroacoustic music from Sweden in various international contexts and sees as one of its main tasks to act as an informer, both nationally and internationally. Foreign composers regularly come to EMS to work and may be granted a working period by submitting a project application. As EMS Elektronmusikstudion is a part of the Swedish Performing Arts Agency (Statens musikverk), everything posted on this page is public record and will be handled accordingly. Michael Vallera (b. 1984) is a Chicago-based musician and visual artist who uses the guitar and electronics to explore stasis, texture, and an overall sense of intimate sonic space. His visual work employs photography and collage to communicate similar themes, highlighting aspects of symmetry and balance.

In 2010, he received his MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a concentration in Sound, with a particular focus on studio techniques related to long-form composition and drone music. Structures of repetition and dissonance are staples of his sound-based practice, influenced equally by principles of minimalism and the unique history of experimental guitar musics, drawing critical comparison of his work to the likes of Keith Rowe and Christian Fennesz.

He has collaborated through performance and recording with artists such as Lee Ranaldo, Loren Connors, Doug McCombs, Alan Licht, Elliott Sharp, and Steve Hauschildt. He performs as Cleared with percussionist Steven Hess and as Maar with visual artist and musician Joseph Clayton Mills.

David Bird is a composer, producer, and multimedia artist. His work explores the dramatic potential of electroacoustic and multimedia environments, often highlighting the relationships between technology and the individual.

Bird’s compositions have been performed at venues such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, as well as at festivals including Donaueschinger Musiktage, Gaudeamus Festival, Wien Modern, MATA Festival, Musica Electronica Nova Festival, Festival Mixtur, and more. He has collaborated with groups such as JACK Quartet, Yarn/Wire, Talea Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente, International Contemporary Ensemble, Mantra Percussion, Mivos Quartet, and Bozzini Quartet. His work has been released on labels such as Oxtail Recordings, New Focus Recordings, Carrier Records, and TAK Editions, and has received praise from outlets such as The New York Times, The Wire, Textura, and Best of Bandcamp.

Working across song cycles and electro-acoustic composition for solo performance, ensembles, and site-responsive contexts, Jules Reidy creates music that explores devotional love, transcendence, and dissolution. Their practice evokes states of uncanniness, dissociation, imagination, and the void.

Their current collaborations include projects with Sun Kit, Judith Hamann, Andrea Belfi, Sam Dunscombe, David Grubbs, Jan St. Werner and Ivan Cheng.

They’re also a member of the Pitch and Oren Ambarchi’s various large ensembles.

They’ve recently written for JACK Quartet, Zinc&Copper and the Australian Art Orchestra.

They’ve released on Thrill Jockey, Black Truffle, Shelter Press, Editions Mego and Longform Editions.

They are originally from Australia, and are currently based in Berlin.

Vili Aarre is an artist who makes music, sound and sound design. Vili works across contemporary performing arts, music and fine arts. At the core of Vili’s practice is combining beauty and swag.

With a background in electric guitar music and dramaturgically coherent stage art, Vili creates sound in which the timbres and rhythms of pop culture open portals to multi-temporal microdramaturgies, premonitions of something beyond the everyday.

Vili’s current music consists of sound beings as pompous melodies, distortion, uncanny colors and collapsing tremolos.

The collaboration of Thomas Bjelkeborn and Philippe Moenne-Loccoz is all about computer aided human interface development and experimental live electronics. Their recent music for the joint ensemble Sound Quartet is airing multichannel immersive sound worlds and is continuously presented at concerts in France, Spain, and Sweden.

Their work sessions at Elektronmusikstudion EMS concludes a prolific array of compositional work periods in the studio since the 90’s.

Jana Winderen is an artist based in Norway with a background in mathematics, chemistry and fish ecology. Her practice pays particular attention to audio environments and to creatures which are hard for humans to access, both physically and aurally – deep under water, inside ice or in frequency ranges inaudible to the human ear.

Her activities include site-specific and spatial audio installations and concerts, which have been exhibited and performed internationally in major institutions and public spaces. Recent work includes The River at Jerwood Gallery, Natural History Museum, London, Absent Voices, Haus der Kunst, Munich, The Art of Listening: Underwater at Lenfest Center for the Arts, Colombia University, New York, Listening through the Dead Zones for IHME, Helsinki, The Art of Listening: Underwater for Audemar Piguet at Art Basel, Miami, Rising Tide at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo, Listening with Carp for Now is the Time in Wuzhen, Through the Bones for Thailand Art Biennale in Krabi, bára for TBA21_Academy, Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone for Sonic Acts, Dive in Park Avenue Tunnel in New York and Ultrafield for MoMA, New York. In 2011 she won the Golden Nica at Ars Electronica for Digital Musics & Sound Art. She releases her audio-visual work on Touch (UK).

In connection with her residency Jana will host a workshop 9-11 October “From the Crow’s to the Cod’s Perspective”.

Khaled Kurbeh is a Berlin-based musician and composer. In his art practice muhawalāt [attempts, variations] and hawāmesh [sonic footnotes], he layers fragments of piano, amplified buzuq and field recordings.

Experimenting with long-form improvisation, maqām and electroacoustic composition, Kurbeh’s projects often depart from questions like “what happens if___?”. Filling in the blank, he makes sounds and records them (sometimes) – as can be heard on his albums Likulli Fadāin Eqāeh (Research Records, 2025) and Aphorisms with Raman Khalaf Ensemble (!K7 imprint Between Buttons, 2017).

His work has been presented in Asia, Europe and Australia at: Funkhaus, Berlin; ISA Gallery, Jakarta; Brunswick Music Festival, Naarm; Edinburgh Festival Fringe; Münchner Kammerspiele; New Diorama Theatre, London; Novi Sad Theatre; and XJAZZ! Festival, Berlin.

In recent years, he has composed and performed with theatremakers including director Omar Elerian, the theatre collective Rhum and Clay, Collective Ma’louba, Wayang Rajakaya shadow puppetry theatre with Herlambang Bayu Aji. He scored the soundtrack for Almourad Aldeeb’s films Estahbes (Visions du Réel, 2026) and On The Dry Bank of the River [جفاف] (Cairo International Film Festival, 2024). He holds an M.A. from Berlin-Weißensee Academy of Arts, Germany.
