Moving a company’s own goods from another EU Member State to Sweden can create Swedish VAT registration and reporting obligations – even though no sale takes place.
For VAT purposes, the movement is generally treated as an intra-Community acquisition in Sweden. A foreign company may therefore need a Swedish VAT registration before the first goods are transferred to a Swedish warehouse or 3PL provider.
The transfer must normally be reported in the Swedish VAT return, and the subsequent sale or movement of the goods from Sweden must be assessed separately.
Specific rules may apply, for example, to temporary movements, goods sent to Sweden for processing or valuation, and call-off stock arrangements.
Companies transferring their own goods to Sweden should therefore determine the Swedish VAT treatment before the first transfer takes place.
