The White & Case Russian National Championship

Jessup is an event eagerly awaited for each year by members of the legal profession both in Russia and abroad, the 11th Annual Russian Championship of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, took place in Moscow. This year’s Jessup Competition was marked by 42 universities taking part in the Russian Championship. This great int

erest in the Jessup Competition by the universities clearly shows their recognition of the importance of the event for the legal educational system in Russia. Inviting all Jessup participants, potential participants and interested persons. On Thursday, July 25, 18:00 Moscow Time, Pericles Center for International Legal Education invites you to join us for a free one-hour webinar on the Law of the Sea, UNCLOS, and “the legal implications of receding coastlines for coastal states' maritime zones,” an announced topic in the 2025 Jessup Moot Court problem. Taught by well known international maritime law expert Dr. George Murvanidze, who has graciously volunteered his time to help Jessup participants, this webinar will provide valuable insights to jump start your preparation for this year’s competition.

Dr. Murvanidze is a distinguished expert with a strong background in both academia and practical experience in the field. He holds degrees from Tulane University and Cambridge, and has over 30 years of experience practicing maritime and admiralty law. He is a member of the London Association of Maritime Arbitrators, and a frequent judge in the Russian Jessup competition.

Dr. Murvanidze will explain the basics of the law of the sea, and particularly the mechanisms of maritime boundary setting. UNCLOS provides a framework for determining maritime zones, such as territorial waters, contiguous zones, and exclusive economic zones, based on fixed geographical coordinates or natural features. But those features aren’t necessarily stable! When coastal borders change due to rising sea levels and coastal erosion, or when states gain territory due to evaporation and accretion, or other natural phenomena change coastlines, disputes and uncertainties can arise regarding countries’ maritime rights. How are these issues resolved?

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the legal framework governing maritime zones and the potential challenges posed by receding coastlines and more. Dr. Murvanidze will also share links to articles and research from various universities on the subject. Don't miss this opportunity to boost your knowledge in advance of your intensive Jessup preparation this fall!

Date: Thursday, July 25
Time: 18:00 MSK (GMT +3)

Pericles Dean Dent gave a lecture today on "Effective Zoom Techniques" to Jessup Moot court participants.

Dean Dent lectured today for the Jessup Moot Court participants on useful tips of effective Zoom presentations. Technical aspects, such as general appearance, posture, lighting, background are all must have taken care of well beforehand.

She started with a “how not to” with bad lighting, patterned clothing, crooked cameras, and lots of distracting background stuff like stuffed cats, titles of books, coffee cups, political posters, and buzzing noises. Then she moved everything distracting behind the zoom screen, closed the curtains and turned on a ring light to show the better method.

The big 3 DON’TS for international online moots:
• DON’T have books or bookshelves visible on screen behind you.
• DON’T have any political slogans or posters anywhere visible.
• DON’T use virtual backgrounds with outdoor location-specific images.
• DON’T use a Cyrillic screen name.

All these can accidentally give away your location/nationality and can disqualify you in international competitions. The best backgrounds are plain colored walls, blinds or curtains, with at most a plant or a lamp visible in the room. That way the audience focuses on your speech and not on your background.

If you happen to know some other useful tips feel free to share with us under this post in comment or in the Student's Brainfood Chat on Telegram. https://t.me/joinchat/UZso3jSGzYeap6kd
