The Portugal Golden Visa isn't dead. It has changed.
One of the most common misconceptions we still encounter is that Portugal's Golden Visa programme has simply disappeared.
It hasn't.
What has changed is how investors can qualify.
The former route based on purchasing Portuguese real estate is no longer available. However, the programme continues through other qualifying investment routes, including certain eligible investment funds.
For investors and their families, this can still represent an important route to Portuguese residency, subject to the applicable requirements.
But there is an important distinction:
The programme is considerably more technical than it once was.
Before making an investment decision, it is essential to understand:
• What investment qualifies
• Whether the chosen structure meets the applicable requirements
• The relevant residency obligations and timelines
• The potential tax implications
• How the investment fits into your wider personal and family objectives
This is not an area where outdated information from a few years ago should guide a significant investment decision.
If residency by investment in Portugal is part of your plans, the right approach is to assess your circumstances before committing capital.
