Portugal has changed its Nationality Law, and if your plans were built around a five-year assumption it's worth taking a fresh look.
Since May 2026 the residence period required for citizenship is seven years for EU and CPLP nationals and ten years for all other nationalities. Just as importantly, that period is now counted from the date your first residence permit is issued, not from the date you applied.
Applications already pending when the new law came into force continue under the previous rules. And permanent residence remains unchanged: it is still available after five years of legal residence.
None of this closes the door to Portugal. It simply means that residence here is now a long-term strategy, and that early decisions about your visa route, your permit timing and your documentation carry more weight than before.
At Vanguard Lawyers we help international clients plan their Portuguese journey with the full picture in view, from the first permit to citizenship.
