Amazing experience to be part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the USPTO Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) at the University of Puerto Rio-Mayagüez! As a speaker for the event, it was exciting to share insights on trade secrets and confidentiality matters. I was also thrilled to engage with local innovators, USPTO representatives, and community leaders who are driving innovation across the island. Here’s to 30 years of fostering creativity and supporting Puerto Rican ingenuity—and to many more years of transforming ideas into impactful realities!

Today, we announce the signing of a definitive agreement to sell our intellectual property rights for the World Series of Poker (WSOP) brand to NSUS Group Inc. including the innovative online poker room, GGPoker. The transaction, valued at a total of $500 million, includes $250 million in cash and a $250 million promissory note due five years after the transaction’s closing date secured by the WSOP intellectual property assets being sold.

As a part of this transaction, we have secured the right from NSUS to continue hosting the WSOP’s record-breaking flagship live tournament series at our Las Vegas casinos for the next 20 years. In addition, brick-and-mortar poker rooms currently operated by us will continue to feature WSOP branding, and our destinations will continue to enjoy preferential rights to host live WSOP Circuit events going forward.

Caesars Digital will also receive a license from NSUS to continue operating its recently upgraded WSOP Online real-money poker business in Nevada, New Jersey, Michigan, and Pennsylvania for the foreseeable future but will otherwise be restricted from operating online peer-to-peer real-money poker operations for a specified period of time and subject to certain exceptions.

Congratulations to our client, the late Mr. Félix M. Solla-Meléndez, and his estate for obtaining a patent related to a negative pressure operating method.

Mr. Solla-Meléndez sadly passed away after his patent application was filed. Fortunately, no objection or rejection was made by the examiner. Ownership was then assigned to his estate and the patent was granted in less than 12 months from the application filing date.

The present case serves to highlight the benefit of submitting all required documents on time and including a well-written invention disclosure when filing a patent application. Doing so prevents unnecessary delays and inconveniences during the examination process, particularly after the passing of an inventor. Most importantly, this scenario illustrates how patents can stand as a lasting legacy for our loved ones over many years to come.

May the pioneering spirit of deceased inventors continue to ignite creativity and inspire ongoing innovation.

A mason jar filled with a Gatorade sample and a persistent scientist helped make the drink’s mass production possible.

Gatorade inventor Robert Cade had already been rejected by the University of Florida, but his students and fellow scientists remained optimistic and determined for him to succeed. At a Christmas party in 1966, scientist Kent Bradley unsuccessfully pitched the drink to Alfred J. Stokely, CEO of the Stokely-Van Camp food company, but brazenly showed up at the company’s lab the next day.

“He told the secretary, ‘I have an appointment. He’s expecting me.’ He went in and sold the idea,” said Phoebe Cade, daughter of Robert Cade. “It never would have happened without him.”

The Story Of The 2nd Most Iconic Smile In The World.

Harvey Ross Ball, a graphic designer from Worcester, Massachusetts, is credited with inventing the iconic smiley face in 1963.
Ball came up with the image in 1963 when he was commissioned to create a graphic to raise morale among the employees of an insurance company after a series of difficult mergers and acquisitions. Ball finished the design in less than 10 minutes and was paid $45 for his work. The State Mutual Life Assurance Company (now Allmerica Financial Corporation) made posters, buttons, and signs adorned with the jaundiced grin in the attempt to get their employees to smile more. It’s uncertain whether or not the new logo boosted morale, but the smiling face was an immediate hit and the company produced thousands of buttons. The image proliferated and was of course endlessly imitated but according to Bill Wallace, Executive Director of the Worcester Historical Museum, the authentic Harvey Ball-designed smiley face could always be identified by its distinguishing features: the eyes are narrow ovals, one larger than the other, and the mouth is not a perfect arc but “almost like a Mona Lisa Mouth.”

Neither Ball nor State Mutual tried to trademark or copyright the design.
