If the expiry date on your Karta Pobytu has passed, the first thing you need to find out is what exactly has expired 🔍
⠀
Sometimes, it is only the physical residence card that has expired, while your legal right to stay in Poland is still valid 🇵🇱
⠀
In other cases, the basis for your stay - your temporary residence permit - has expired.. Then everything depends on whether you submitted a new application before your legal stay ended 😉
⠀
From there, the situation can be very different..
⠀
In one case, you may simply need to replace your residence card 🔃
⠀
In another, you may need to wait for a decision on an application you have already submitted and avoid leaving Poland while your case is pending ☑️
⠀
And in a third situation, your stay may already be irregular, meaning that every day matters 😱
⠀
🆘 Find out which situation applies to you:
⠀
• Has your physical residence card expired, but your residence permit is still valid?
⠀
• Is your residence permit expiring, but you submitted a new application on time?
⠀
• Did your legal stay expire before you submitted a new application?
⠀
Not sure which situation you are in?
⠀
💬 Let’s figure it out together

Your karta pobytu is expiring: what to do and how to apply for a new one (renewal) in Poland?

There is no automatic renewal of a karta pobytu.

The plastic card is not extended – you apply for the next temporary residence permit (zezwolenie na pobyt czasowy), and you must do this before your current card expires. Since 27 April 2026, this application is filed online only, through the MOS portal. While the wojewoda (voivode) reviews your case, your stay remains legal – this is confirmed by the zaświadczenie, which in 2026 replaced the old passport stamp.

A «renewal» is really a new application!

Legally, there is no such thing as «renewing» a karta pobytu. When your card is about to expire, you don’t extend the old document – you apply for the next temporary residence permit (kolejne zezwolenie na pobyt czasowy). The wojewoda treats it as a new case and, in the end, issues a new decision (decyzja) and a new karta pobytu (the plastic).

The plastic card and the wojewoda’s decision are two different things. The plastic is only a physical document; your real status comes from the decyzja. The card ends together with the decision behind it, so what you prepare for the card’s expiry date is not a «renewal» but a full new application.

In terms of procedure, the new application is close to the first one: the same form and attachments, the same case before the wojewoda. Some documents you already gathered last time, but your basis of stay may have changed – it’s worth checking in advance.

During this time, they could have issued both the Decision and the Residence Card 🤯

But the client’s case simply couldn’t make its way from Wroclaw to Katovice..

We had to transfer the case to Lodz because, by that point, the client had already moved there!

A request…
A reminder…
Another letter…
A complaint…

And once again - silence!

Meanwhile, the person is simply living their life, working, paying taxes, but unable to properly plan their future…

It’s scary because, in the system, they’re just a case number 😱

And while the officials aren’t in any hurry, the person is losing months of their life!

14 months 🤯
Katowice, seriously?

This is no longer just bureaucracy! It’s a sign that the system is failing to see the people behind the cases…

How I wish that, finally, behind every case number, inspectors would see not just a file, but a person. ✊🏻

A Poland student visa is a national D visa (wiza krajowa, typ D) that you apply for at a Polish consulate before you enter the country.

It lets you come to Poland and stay for study for longer than 90 days 🇵🇱

For a longer legal stay after entry, you no longer use a visa but a residence card (Karta Pobytu), issued by the Voivodeship Office (Urząd wojewódzki).
