Fortunately, the Sejm rejected at the FIRST READING the draft law proposed by the Law and Justice party aimed at tightening the rules for obtaining Polish citizenship 🇵🇱
We would like to remind you that under this draft law, only highly assimilated foreigners would have been eligible to apply for citizenship, namely those who:
✔️ have sufficient knowledge about Poland, including its history, culture, and political system
✔️ are fluent in the Polish language at C1 level
✔️ do not pose a threat to state security
✔️ are not a burden on the state budget
The draft law proposed, in particular:
• increasing the waiting period for citizenship to 15 years
• in the case of marriage - a requirement of at least 6 years of marriage to a Polish citizen
• for refugees - the possibility to apply for citizenship after 10 years
• mandatory written and oral Polish language exams at C1 level
• passing a State Citizenship Exam covering history, culture, the political system, civil rights, and traditions
• a requirement to have a stable source of income, legal right to housing, no criminal record, as well as a positive opinion from the local police commander for the last 10 years, and a ban on using social benefits provided by social welfare services
For now, the citizenship requirements remain unchanged, but not for long…
