cryptocurrency that works without the internet
Mesh Radio - Bitcoin over walkie-talkies. SMS / USSD - The African solution. Satellite - Bitcoin from space. Blockstream Satellite. True offline cash - NFC / QR. This is for CBDCs and new wallets like PureWallet or BitMint hard wallets. Two phones touch via NFC/Bluetooth, exchange signed transactions, and settle later when one gets online. It's like a digital banknote. Works for < 100m range, perfect for markets, festivals, disaster zones.
Project Name: OfflineChain
Basic Principle
OfflineChain is a hybrid payment system that allows cryptocurrency transactions between devices without internet access, using direct communication (Bluetooth, NFC, WiFi Direct) and mesh networks.
Key Idea: A transaction doesn't need to be immediately recorded on the blockchain—it simply needs to be properly digitally signed and verified locally.
System Architecture
1. Offline Communication Layer
- Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) — for payments between phones up to 100 meters
- NFC — for touch-based payments (like contactless)
- LoRa/radio mesh — for communication over longer distances (several kilometers) in the field
- QR codes — as a backup transmission channel for signed transactions
2. Offline Transaction Mechanism
The process is as follows:
1. Online Phase (Preparation):
- The user downloads the current blockchain state and public keys to the wallet
- The system generates "Offline Tokens" (OT) with time and amount restrictions
2. Offline Phase (Payment):
- The sender signs the transaction with a private key on a device without internet
- The recipient verifies the sender's signature and balance using locally stored blockchain data
- The transaction is saved in the queue of both devices
3. Synchronization Phase:
- When one of the devices reg*ins internet connection, Transactions are sent to the network
- The blockchain verifies and validates transactions as usual
3. Double-spend protections
This is the biggest challenge. Solutions:
- Time limit for offline tokens—tokens expire after 24-72 hours, forcing synchronization
- Amount limits—maximum offline transaction value (e.g., $50-100 USD equivalent)
- Node reputation—devices build a "trust score" based on transaction history
- Double-spend penalties—detection of a double-spend attempt blocks the wallet and requires identity verification
Example use case
Scenario: Natural disaster, internet and power outage. Token: OFC (OfflineCoin). Parameter = Value
Token type - Utility token on Layer 2
Maximum offline transaction: 100 OFC
Offline token validity: 48 hours
Based network: Ethereum or Bitcoin (Lightning Network)
Communication: BLE, NFC, LoRa, QR
Verification: SPV (Simplified Payment Verification) locally
