Święto Wojska Polskiego 🇵🇱

On this day in 1920, the Polish line held at Radzymin. The city behind it did not fall, and the war that was meant to carry revolution into Europe turned around instead. Poles have called it Cud nad Wisłą — the Miracle on the Vistula — ever since.

Today Poland honours the soldiers of that battle, and all who came before and after them. The hussars at Vienna. The insurgents of 1830 and 1863, who fought for a country that existed only in their homes and their songs. The volunteers who sailed back from Chicago and Toronto to fight for a Poland they had never seen. The pilots of 303 Squadron, the men of Monte Cassino, the Home Army. Many of them never saw the free Poland they fought for.

There is an old soldiers' song from 1863, still sung at Polish military funerals today:

"Śpij, kolego, w ciemnym grobie,
Niech się Polska przyśni tobie."

Sleep, comrade, in your dark grave. May Poland come to you in your dreams.
