The Sindh High Court Bar Association, Sukkur strongly condemns the arrest and illegal detention of the Advocate High Court Haider Mallah, Khuda Bux Dar, Jam Shoukat Abro, and more than 80 others.
The said persons have reportedly been missing for the last 24 hours following their arrest by the Umerkot Police after holding a press conference outside the Umerkot Press Club.
It is particularly concerning that some persons, who were present in Umerkot to participate in a peaceful protest against the proposed division of Sindh, has allegedly been implicated in a false FIR containing provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Such actions against peaceful political workers are highly condemnable and constitute an alarming misuse of the criminal justice system.
The Bar strongly condemns the arrest, alleged illegal detention, and registration of false and politically motivated cases against the Advocates.
The Bar urges the Inspector General of Police, Sindh, to take immediate notice of the matter and issue necessary directions to the concerned police authorities for the immediate release of all detained Advocates.
It is further disturbing that some of the detainees were recovered in a raid on police station by the learned Judicial Magistrate, Umerkot, who reportedly directed the police to release them. Despite the order of the learned Judicial Magistrate, the police allegedly refused to release the detainees.
The Bar demands that the IG Sindh Police respect the orders of the competent Courts, ensure the immediate release of all unlawfully detained advocates, and refrain from using criminal proceedings to suppress political expression against respective advocates and others.
