Ali Nawaz Khuhawar

Ali is a partner of the firm based in Karachi. He has an experience of 10 years in a wide range of areas of law including Revenue Land matters, Taxation, Contract Law, Employment Law etc. He joined our firm as an associate and quickly rose to the position of a partner.

His experience in litigation matters including handling complicated tax and property related matters and has been involved in drafting and arguing a number of such matters before the High Court of Sindh at Karachi. Ali holds a specialisation and receives instructions on matters concerning industrial utilities, immoveable property and taxation. He also advises companies and individuals on issues pertaining to Green Energy, Environmental Regulations and Laws, Healthcare, Healthcare Delivery, Large Scale Manufacturing and other associated issues.

Ali s regularly instructed by Clients in the Textile Export Chain and also advises on cross-border disputes, litigations and formation of offshore subsidies and companies.

Chaudhry Hassan Murtaza Mann

Hasan Mann is the firm’s partner and is based in Islamabad. He holds an LL.M. in Commercial Law from the prestigious King’s College London. Prior to joining the firm as Partner, Hasan had experience in financial, commercial, constitutional, banking and tax matters in the United Kingdom and Pakistan. In Pakistan he has worked with major commercial practices of the country like Akram Sheikh Law Associates and HaidermotaBNR.

He has a vast experience in contentious and non-contentious matters. His main areas of practice include general legal advisory work on civil and commercial laws of Pakistan including company law, acquisitions (including equity and asset based acquisitions), competition law, regulatory issues (including power, oil & gas, telecommunication, media), banking, international sale of goods, service contracts, franchise and distribution contracts, concession agreements, project finance, privatisation, petroleum laws and undertaking civil, commercial and constitutional litigation before different tribunals and courts including High Courts as well as regulatory authorities. Ishaq is a partner of the firm based in Karachi. Ishaq has vast experience spanning 19 years in corporate matters including banking, corporate finance, Islamic finance, project finance, debt restructuring, real estate matters, sukuk transactions, securitization transactions, issuance of TFCs, demutualization of Karachi Stock Exchange, structured finance transactions, legal audits, takeovers, mergers, de-mergers, commercial paper, shares, etc. Before joining the firm as a partner, Ishaq was a partner at Ahmed & Qazi and head of its corporate practice.

Ishaq also has diversified experience in litigation matters and has appeared before a number of High Courts of Pakistan. Previously he has been a partner at a leading commercial and corporate law firm of Pakistan.

He has provided consultancy and advisory services to various REIT Schemes including Silk Islamic Development REIT, Silk World Islamic REIT and JS Rental REIT. Currently, Ishaq Shah has been providing consultancy services to clients for setting up a bio-gas project through the REIT structure.

He has successfully challenged the demand of Customs Authorities for refusing the transport of goods from Gawadar Free Zone to Tariff Zone and vice versa in the absence of Foreign Exchange Instrument, before the Hon’ble High Court of Balochistan. He has rendered advice to various corporate businesses in areas of listing/de-listing of companies on Pakistan Stock Exchange, mergers, acquisitions, antitrust/competition laws, etc.

SMMS Legal has challenged NEPRA’s SROs 977(i)/2023 dated 27.07.2023 and SRO
946(i)2023 dated 26.6.2023 w.e.f. 01.07.2023, before the Hon’ble High Court of Sindh at Karachi on behalf of members of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association. The SROs required payment of electricity bills on higher rates, while giving retrospective effect to the impugned SROs.

The Hon’ble Court has been pleased to pass stay order in favour of the firm’s clients.
