Indian cinema has lost an irreplaceable artist today. Nana Patekar has passed away at his home in Goa. He was 75.
Growing up, the first time I truly noticed Nana Patekar was in Parinda. The film had Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff, two big stars of that era, yet Nana Patekar easily managed to overshadow them.
His intensity, his eyes and the way he delivered every line - he had created a style that was completely his own.
And then came performances that showed just how extraordinary he was.
Prahaar. Krantiveer. Agni Sakshi. Ghulam-E-Mustafa. Wajood. Ab Tak Chhappan. Taxi No. 9 2 11 and many more.
Different characters, different worlds - but always that unmistakable Nana Patekar presence.
He could make you uncomfortable simply by being on the screen. Then came another side of him that nobody quite expected.
The man known for intense and serious roles suddenly had millions laughing with “Control Uday, control!” and his unforgettable chemistry with Majnu Bhai in the cult classic Welcome. Even today, Uday Bhai’s scenes, expressions and dialogues continue to live on through memes.
Away from cinema, Nana also became a powerful voice for farmers and rural communities, working for drought-hit villages, water conservation and farmers’ families. It was another side of a man who never seemed afraid to speak his mind.
And now, Nana Patekar has left us with one final shock. This time, with news none of us wanted to hear.
From some of Indian cinema’s most intense characters to the unforgettable Uday Bhai, he leaves behind a legacy that will be discovered and celebrated for generations.
Nana Patekar, you will be missed. 💔
