During the pandemic, the Filipino middle class discovered remote work. It was a societal revolution. Workers saved hours of commute time, redirected their spending to their local provincial economies, and improved their mental health.

But this terrified the billionaire class.

The wealthiest families in the Philippines own the massive office towers in BGC, Makati, and Ortigas. If companies realize they don't need office space, the value of those towers crashes. Furthermore, these same families own the tollways, the mega-malls, and the fast-food chains surrounding the offices.

To protect their real estate portfolios, the elite lobbied the government to threaten BPO companies with massive tax penalties if they didn't force their employees back into the office.

The oligarchy mathematically forced millions of Filipinos back into agonizing 4-hour daily commutes, not to do better work, but simply to act as captive consumers to artificially prop up the value of billionaire-owned concrete.
