Did you know Palawan wasn’t always an island? Millions of years ago, it was actually part of mainland Asia!

As the Earth’s crust shifted, Palawan broke away from Asia and slowly drifted south. Eventually, it crashed directly into neighboring ocean plates. This massive collision acted like a giant wedge, pushing the underwater seabed and ancient coral reefs thousands of feet above sea level.

Over time, heavy tropical rain carved these raised coral reefs into the sharp limestone cliffs and giant cave systems we see today in places like El Nido, Coron, and Puerto Princesa. The towering mountains of Palawan are actually fossilized sea floors raised above the water by ancient plate collisions.
