The peso risks sinking to an all-time low of ₱65 against the United States (US) dollar over the next three years if the government maintains its passive stance toward escalating global tensions. Jonathan Ravelas, senior adviser at Reyes Tacandong & Co., said during a Pandesal Forum on Wednesday, May 20, that the widening current account deficit and surging energy prices—both driven by geopolitical friction—are poised to exacerbate pressure on the local currency.

The peso remains highly vulnerable to global shocks, Ravelas said, noting that without decisive state intervention to mitigate these external spillovers, the currency is likely to sustain deep losses in the near term, having already been battered to historical lows recently.

Mergers and Acquisitions

Structuring the Transaction
Strategically design the optimal transaction framework—whether an asset acquisition, share purchase, statutory merger, joint venture, or alternative structure—to seamlessly align with multifaceted objectives, including tax efficiency (e.g., minimizing capital gains or VAT implications under the National Internal Revenue Code), regulatory approvals (e.g., from the SEC, PIC, or antitrust bodies like the PCC), and commercial goals such as value maximization, risk allocation, and post-closing integration.

Conducting Comprehensive Due Diligence
Perform thorough due diligence across critical domains, including corporate governance records, material contracts, contingent liabilities, intellectual property portfolios, ongoing or threatened litigation, employment and labor matters, and regulatory compliance (e.g., anti-money laundering under AMLA and data privacy under the DPA). This process uncovers red flags, deal-breakers, or value-enhancing opportunities, enabling informed negotiations and risk mitigation.

Drafting and Negotiating Core Transactional Documents
Prepare and negotiate essential agreements, such as the term sheet (outlining high-level terms and conditions), share purchase agreement (SPA) or asset purchase agreement (APA), joint venture agreement, shareholders' agreement or consent protocols, and transitional services agreements. These documents incorporate protective covenants, indemnities, warranties, and closing mechanics tailored to safeguard client interests and facilitate smooth ex*****on.

The Southeast Asian corporate landscape has demonstrated strong resilience over the past year, effectively weathering global market turbulence and shifting trade dynamics. According to the 2026 rankings by TIME and Statista, companies across the region are not only surviving but actively transforming—focusing on regional integration and technological adoption. This shift is especially visible in the banking sector, where institutions have capitalized on high-interest environments and the rapid integration of artificial intelligence to sustain record profitability. DBS Bank leads the region as the top performer, followed closely by Bank of the Philippine Islands, both recognized for their strong digital transformation and high employee satisfaction.

Beyond finance, conglomerates and tech-driven firms are increasingly shaping Southeast Asia’s economic trajectory. Companies like Ayala Corporation and Sime Darby have successfully navigated inflation through diversified business portfolios. At the same time, the transportation and logistics sector is gaining momentum, with Grab Holdings and Singapore Airlines benefiting from the rebound in regional travel and the expansion of the digital economy. This upward trend is further reinforced by Vingroup, highlighting Vietnam’s growing role in global supply chains and electric vehicle manufacturing.

The region’s top ten companies reflect a broad mix of financial strength, infrastructure development, and digital innovation. Leading the list are DBS Bank and Bank of the Philippine Islands, followed by Maybank and United Overseas Bank. They are joined by Ayala Corporation, BDO Unibank, OCBC Bank, and Vingroup, while the final positions are held by Gamuda and Grab Holdings. Ranked globally at positions 1, 10, 16, 24, 35, 47, 51, 57, 61, and 69 respectively, these firms underscore Southeast Asia’s rising influence within the broader Asia-Pacific economy.
