The lifeblood doctrine serves as the ultimate legal justification for the state's coercive power to collect taxes, recognizing that the preservation of a civilized society supersedes individual financial convenience. Nevertheless, it does not grant the state a license for tyranny or arbitrary confiscation. In a constitutional democracy, the lifeblood doctrine must always operate hand-in-hand with due process, equity, and the rule of law. The state is entitled to its lifeblood, but only through legitimate, fair, and constitutional means.

Ever feel like life is asking you to carry more than your shoulders were built for?

Instead of relying on a "brute strength" that eventually runs out of steam, Paul prays for a glorious inner strength: one anchored deep in the Father’s love.

As we step into a brand new week, here is your reminder to:

Plant your feet firmly: Let your week be grounded not in hustle or stress, but in love.

Explore the boundless: Christ’s love isn't rigid or small; it has extravagant dimensions. Reach out for its breadth, test its length, plumb its depths, and rise to its heights!

Live fully: You aren't meant to just "survive" this week on empty. You are invited to live a full life, full in the very fullness of God.

THE LEGAL PROFESSION IS NOBLE BECAUSE IT CARRIES A DUTY TO JUSTICE

In the Philippines, the practice of law is a regulated profession, earned through legal education, admission to the Bar, and a continuing obligation to uphold the law and professional ethics.

That is why a lawyer’s professional identity should be independently verifiable.

A LAWYER’S NAME CAN BE STOLEN. YOUR MONEY CAN BE TOO.

Fraudulent accounts may appropriate a lawyer’s name, photographs, professional information, or legal content to create a false appearance of legitimacy. In some cases, such deception may be used to obtain personal information, money, or other financial benefits through misrepresentation or fraud.

A social media profile, professional photograph, legal terminology, or display of wealth is not proof of authority to practice law.

Do not rely on appearance. Verify the person.

Before entrusting anyone with your legal concerns, documents, or money, independently verify their professional identity through authoritative sources, including the Supreme Court’s Lawyers List and Roll of Attorneys, and confirm claimed Bar admission and IBP affiliation where appropriate.

Do not rely solely on certificates, screenshots, IDs, or other credentials supplied by the person claiming to be a lawyer.

If someone becomes evasive, threatening, or financially demanding when asked for basic professional verification, treat that as a serious warning sign—not as proof of legal authority.

In law, identity matters. Verify before you trust.

The Constitution protects every person’s right to be secure against unreasonable searches and seizures. Under Article III, Section 2 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, the State cannot arbitrarily intrude into a person’s home, privacy, papers, or personal effects.

A search warrant must satisfy constitutional requirements, including probable cause personally determined by a judge and a particular description of the place to be searched and the persons or things to be seized. Certain exceptions to the warrant requirement are recognized by law, but these must be applied within their legal limits.

Remember, the protection against unreasonable searches and seizures is not merely a procedural rule—it is a safeguard for individual liberty and privacy. Evidence obtained in violation of the constitutional protection may be inadmissible in court.

Know your rights. Understand the law.

In People of the Philippines v. Aron Akil y Guamalon, G.R. No. 265570, April 7, 2025, the Supreme Court emphasized the importance of reliable and admissible evidence in establishing criminal liability.

The Court found that the unauthenticated CCTV footage and suggestive “show-up” identification were insufficient to establish the accused’s identity beyond reasonable doubt. As the prosecution failed to overcome the presumption of innocence, the accused was acquitted.

Key Takeaway: In criminal cases, suspicion cannot replace proof beyond reasonable doubt. When the evidence leaves reasonable doubt as to the accused’s identity, the law requires acquittal.

A Deed of Absolute Sale is the ultimate legal mechanism for transferring ownership in the Philippines. While its core purpose is identical for both asset classes—to permanently sever the seller's rights and establish the buyer's full ownership—the ex*****on pathways diverge sharply based on the nature of the property:
Real property demands strict adherence to state zoning, mandatory notarization, and heavy tax compliance (CGT and DST) to secure a new title through the Registry of Deeds.

Personal property relies on physical delivery, specific identification marks, and registration with specialized agencies like the LTO or SEC.
Ultimately, a sale is never truly complete upon the mere exchange of money or the signing of the document. True legal protection and ownership security are only achieved once all applicable taxes are cleared with the BIR, a Certificate Authorizing Registration (CAR) is issued, and the asset is officially registered under the buyer’s name in the government's central registries.

The doctrine of stare decisis, embodied in Article 8 of the Civil Code, promotes stability, consistency, and fairness in the Philippine legal system. It requires courts to follow established legal principles so that the law remains predictable and is not changed simply by shifts in politics or changes in the judiciary.
However, stare decisis is not absolute. The Supreme Court may overturn an outdated or clearly erroneous precedent when necessary.
Ultimately, the doctrine balances stability with the need for the law to adapt, ensuring that Philippine law remains both consistent and responsive to changing circumstances.

When your identity is firmly rooted in the "Father of compassion," you learn that people are meant to be mirrors that reflect God's love to you rather than the ultimate source of it. When we expect friends, family, or a spouse to be our primary comfort, we inevitably get hurt because human beings are inherently flawed, tired, and dealing with their own pain. Suffering often exposes these counterfeits, much like it did for Paul when he was in Asia despairing of life itself and found that his status, achievements, and networks could not save him. These trials happen not to punish us, but to strip away all false security until we realize the things we built our identity on were just sand. Ultimately, letting God fill you up first heals your relationships because you stop using people to fix your loneliness or insecurity. Instead of entering relationships desperately trying to extract worth, you are sustained by a source that never runs dry, freeing you to give love generously.

Books that secretly prepared me for law school

I was basically "brainwashed" to be a lawyer by my lolo, whose obsession with books completely rubbed off on me. All that childhood reading did more than just boost my English proficiency because it also built the ultimate reading stamina. When I hit the law school meat grinder, I skipped the brutal mental shock of handling hundreds of pages a day because my brain was already trained to sit still and process long texts. It saved me from re-reading paragraphs five times and let me focus on analyzing the law and surviving intense recitations.
