At KATUNGOD 2026, Atty. Lopoz will examine how the continuing struggle for accountability extends beyond the War on Drugs and into broader questions about the state of human rights in Mindanao today.
His presentation will explore how human rights defenders, church workers, Lumad educators, Indigenous leaders, lawyers, journalists, and community advocates have faced red-tagging, surveillance, harassment, trumped-up charges, and judicial persecution while defending rights and serving vulnerable communities.
From the War on Drugs to the conviction of the Talaingod 13, difficult questions remain about impunity, state power, democratic accountability, and the protection of those who speak out against injustice.
For Mindanao, these issues are not abstract. They are reflected in the experiences of Lumad communities displaced from their ancestral lands, the closure of Lumad schools, attacks against human rights defenders, and the continuing search for truth and justice by victims of state violence.
The pursuit of accountability for victims of the Drug War and the call for justice for the Talaingod 13 may involve different cases, but both raise fundamental questions about human rights, the rule of law, and the kind of democracy the Philippines seeks to build.
As a Davao-based Mindanawon lawyer who has spent years defending rights and advancing access to justice, Atty. Lopoz brings an important legal perspective to understanding the challenges confronting Mindanao and the nation today.
