Eight major employers, including Microsoft and Adobe, have been suspended from the PERM labor certification program, an important step in most employer-sponsored green card cases.

The Department of Labor announced the suspensions on October 8, naming Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, HCL, and Capgemini.

Under the announced action, new PERM filings involving these companies are stopped, and pending applications are reportedly on hold.

This is a targeted suspension, not a change to the PERM program for all employers.

Companies not named in the announcement can continue their PERM processes under existing rules. The suspensions also do not cancel existing H-1B work authorization at the affected companies. Questions remain about how they'll affect cases already in progress and how long the restrictions will last.

USCIS may contact neighbors, coworkers, or employers as part of its review of citizenship applications. But neighborhood investigations aren't automatic, and not every applicant will undergo one: https://bit.ly/4i8xfyq

The agency resumed these investigations in 2025 and issued updated guidance in August 2026 explaining how it decides whether a check is necessary.

Applicants may voluntarily provide reference letters from people who know them personally, preferably U.S. citizens who are not family members. These letters can help USCIS assess whether an investigation is needed, although they do not guarantee a waiver.

The guidance applies to naturalization applications pending or filed on or after August 25, 2026.

We've put together three things applicants should know, including practical steps to prepare. Save this post for reference or share it with someone preparing to apply for citizenship.

DHS has proposed new fees that could significantly change the cost of Optional Practical Training (OPT) for international students.

The proposal would require schools to pay $70,000 for a student's first OPT recommendation after the rule takes effect, followed by $30,000 for each subsequent recommendation.

But schools wouldn't necessarily have to absorb those costs. They could pass them along to students, employers, or the broader student body.

For students already working on OPT, their existing work authorization would not be affected, but a future recommendation for a STEM OPT extension could trigger a fee.

These fees are not currently in effect. DHS is accepting public comments through November 9, 2026, and any final rule could differ from the proposal.

Students and employers should continue following existing OPT requirements while reviewing upcoming application and extension timelines.

Our latest article explains how the proposed fees would work, who could be responsible for paying, and what steps students and employers can consider now.

Could an L-1 visa be an option for your company?

For employers looking to transfer employees from an overseas business to the U.S., the L-1 can offer a valuable alternative to traditional H-1B sponsorship. But eligibility depends on more than simply having an international presence.

In this excerpt from our recent employer webinar, Boundless Supervising Immigration Counsel Brittney Quezada-Reed breaks down the requirements companies should understand, from qualifying business relationships to employee work history. She also explains how a blanket L-1 petition may help eligible employers streamline future transfers.

The best time to evaluate an employee’s immigration options is before a deadline creates urgency.

That’s especially important in a visa landscape where F-1 and J-1 rules remain unsettled, H-1B costs and requirements continue to evolve, and another visa pathway may make more sense depending on the employee, position, and company.

For employers, the larger lesson is simple: immigration planning should be part of workforce planning.

From green card availability to rising filing fees, there was a lot to follow in immigration last week.

The October Visa Bulletin brought mixed movement, some USCIS fees are set to increase Oct. 16, and a second federal court blocked the $100,000 H-1B fee. USCIS is also reporting more than 727,000 pending standard naturalization applications, while major EB-5 fee increases are coming Nov. 30.

We’ve broken down the biggest developments and what they could mean for immigrants and employers. Read this week’s roundup: https://bit.ly/478XaRs

If you’re deciding between a K-1 fiancé(e) visa and a marriage-based green card, your relationship status is one of the first things to consider.

A K-1 visa allows a U.S. citizen’s fiancé(e) to come to the U.S. to marry within 90 days. Couples who are already married generally follow the spousal visa process instead. From there, the two paths differ in important ways, including when permanent residency begins, work eligibility, costs, and the steps required after arrival.

Our guide compares the two options and can help you understand which path may fit your situation: https://bit.ly/3Vz07Iq

A second federal court has blocked the $100,000 fee on certain new H-1B petitions.

On Sept. 30, a California federal judge ruled that USCIS and the State Department failed to follow required rulemaking procedures before implementing the fee. The ruling follows a separate Massachusetts decision earlier this year, which the government is currently appealing.

For now, employers should not be required to pay the $100,000 fee covered by the court rulings. The litigation is still ongoing, however, and questions remain about pending petitions and payments already made.

Heritage doesn’t disappear when a family moves. It can travel through language, traditions, food, music, family stories, and the many small things that connect one generation to the next.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re recognizing the histories and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the United States and sharing a little of the history behind the observance itself.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, a date that coincides with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence in the days that follow.

For many families, heritage can be both a connection to where they came from and part of the life they continue building here.
