“Words have consequences.”
In 1919, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. wrote that even the strongest protection of free speech would not protect someone from falsely shouting “fire” in a theatre and causing a panic.
The principle remains relevant today.
📱 Social media has become our modern public square; and, in many ways, our modern crowded theater. A single harmful rumor, malicious post, or coordinated act of disinformation can reach thousands or even millions of people within minutes.
Freedom of speech is a fundamental right. But with every right comes responsibility.
Before we post, share, or amplify information, we should ask ourselves:
Is it true? Is it responsible? Could it cause unnecessary harm?
Let us use our platforms to inform, educate, and build, not to spread fear, hatred, or chaos.
⚖️ Verba volant, scripta manent.
Spoken words fly away; written words remain.
