To glory or to ruin, it'll be unstoppable when it does
The race to build AI data centers is running into growing resistance across the United States. Dozens of cities, counties, and local governments have passed restrictions or bans on new projects as communities push back against the impact these facilities can have on local infrastructure - which is great news!
One of the biggest concerns people have is resource consumption. Large AI data centers can use enormous amounts of electricity and water, with some facilities requesting enough power to rival that of entire small cities. Residents and local officials say this could put pressure on electrical grids, increase utility costs, strain water supplies, and create noise pollution from around the clock operations. (See some of our previous posts on this.)
As developers look beyond major urban centers and increasingly target rural communities for new projects, many small towns are wisely debating whether the economic benefits outweigh the potential costs to local resources and quality of life.
