When a loved one is detained, the word "bond hearing" can sound intimidating. Understanding what it actually involves takes some of the fear out of it.

A bond hearing is where an immigration judge decides whether a detained person may be released while their case moves forward. Several things can shape that decision:

▪️ Ties to the community, like family, work, and time in the area
▪️ Whether the person is considered a flight risk
▪️ Any prior criminal or immigration history
▪️ Supporting documents and letters that strengthen the case

The judge weighs each of these, so how well the case is prepared and documented can shape the outcome. To put your loved one's strongest case forward, reach out at wogwulaw.com.

People often mix up immigration bond and criminal bail. Both can get someone released, but they belong to two completely different systems.

Criminal bail is about getting released after an arrest for a crime, handled in criminal court. An immigration bond, on the other hand, can allow someone held by ICE to be released while their case is pending. It is also decided by an immigration judge, not a criminal one.

Most importantly, criminal bail bondsmen cannot help with an ICE detention.

Wogwu Law handles immigration bond hearings and ICE detention, NOT criminal bail. Learn how we can help at wogwulaw.com.

Being told a detained loved one can't get an immigration bond can feel like a door closing, but that isn't always the final word.

Recent legal developments may have opened new bond-hearing possibilities for some detainees, depending on their immigration history, any criminal record, where they are held, and the details of their case. What was true a few months ago may look different today.

If you or someone you know is in an unsafe situation, it is important to know that immigration help may be available privately and confidentially.

Under the Violence Against Women Act, certain survivors of abuse may be able to pursue immigration relief without involving the abusive person in the process. You do not have to depend on someone who has hurt you in order to protect your future.

This type of support is handled with complete discretion. Your safety and dignity come first.

If you have questions or need to speak with someone privately, we are here. Reach out at wogwulaw.com.

Family-based immigration can feel intimidating at first, but in many cases, the starting point is simple: a qualifying relationship with a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident may open the door to immigration options.

Whether that path is available depends on several factors, including your relationship to the family member, that person’s current immigration status, and the details of your individual case. While many people have questions about options for spouses, children, or parents, no two situations are exactly alike.

That is why it is so important to get advice based on your specific circumstances. A conversation with an experienced immigration attorney can help you understand whether a family-based option may be available and what steps may come next.
