Friendly Nations and Pensionado are two of Panama’s best-known residency options — but they differ in much more than how you qualify.

We put them head-to-head: requirements, timelines, dependents, benefits and the path to permanent residency.

Different paths, same destination. Let’s compare.

One thing I like about immigration law in Panama is that it’s a pretty objective process.

Unless there’s something substantial on an applicant’s background check, or some ambiguity in the paperwork, the application itself is usually pretty straightforward.

But the variable that sits just outside our control is the processing time of government offices.

An online platform goes down. An internal system gets updated. The power goes out. A notary is short-staffed. Or Immigration runs out of the little plastic cards they use to print residency IDs.

These are all things that can happen. And these are also things that actually have happened.

And they can add hours — or sometimes even days — to an otherwise predictable process.

That’s why we generally ask clients to plan on at least 5 full business days in Panama to submit a residency application.

But most of the time, everything works exactly as planned.

A lot of the people picking up their first residency cards with us this morning only started the process on Monday.

I suppose some of them are probably wondering why we told them to budget 5 days in-country.

It’s a fair question. But we’d much rather leave you with an extra day in Panama than explain why you need an extra one.

And there’s nothing wrong with having a little extra time to celebrate this milestone!

Getting residency is usually the big milestone.

But for clients who still plan to work in Panama (or who want to have the option to do so), sometimes there’s another card worth adding to the wallet.

Darrell got his residency. And this week, he picked up his Panama work permit.

A quick appointment with James, Joy and Lisa this morning to pick up their long-term residency cards.

By the way, last week someone posted a comment asking what we mean when we say “long-term residency cards”. That is not an official term, but I’ll explain why we use it.

You see, our office processes a lot of different kinds of Panama residency visas. There are visas that grant residency for 1 year at a time, 2-year visas, 6-year visas, and permanent residency visas. One-time applications, and visas that can be renewed.

When you apply for most of these visa programs, you initially receive a 6-month provisional residency card. That provisional residency card allows you to remain in Panama (and to come and go as you please) while the visa you are applying for (which we refer to as your “long-term visa”) is being reviewed.

For example, this picture includes people who applied for a couple of different visa programs.

All of their applications were approved, and this morning they each replaced their 6-month provisional residency cards with their new long-term residency cards!

With Jeff and Elena this morning picking up their long-term Panama residency cards, and with Nicole and Michael just getting started!

We have been working with Jeff and Elena for awhile now on a number of different things. But I was actually really surprised this morning when I realized that this actually is the first time I have actually seen them in person!

Bouncing between two different offices, and with the support of our team, I have just missed them each time there has been an in person meeting.

Nevertheless, I feel that we have gotten to know one another over the last months, even if that has been via WhatsApp calls, messages, emails and Zoom calls between Panama City and Chiriqui.

Anyway, we are super happy to help these couples in achieving these key milestones in their Panama adventure!

We are super happy to welcome John and Gina, who are now permanent residents of Panama!

The Pensionado Visa isn’t just one of the most direct and cost-effective paths to permanent residency. It is also one of the most straightforward application processes. Most of your homework consists of just gathering and preparing a few documents back at home. The few days we’ll need you in Panama to submit the application are a breeze!

The Italy-Panama Treaty Visa is one of just a very few programs that still offers a direct path to permanent residency without making a major investment.

If you have Italian citizenship, the barriers to entry on this one are extremely low. And it even allows you to obtain permanent residency for your dependent family members.

We met Paulo and Caroline several months ago through another young family here in Panama, which is increasingly how our little network seems to grow.

And today, we got to pick up their permanent residency cards!

If you’re preparing documents in the U.S. for your Panama residency application, knowing which Panama consulate covers your state matters.

And recently a few of those coverage areas have changed.

We’ve updated both both our interactive Consulate Map and our Panama Consulate Wizard with the latest information.

You can find both of these on our website under RESOURCES.

Because sending everything to the wrong consulate is a particularly annoying way to learn the map changed!

Every day, we get to cross paths with people and families in the middle of their own adventure.

Different stories. Different plans. Different reasons for being here.

And we get to play a small part in their journeys. We get to help them along the way.

I really like this part of the job.
