🇺🇸 Veterans Living in Panama — Don’t Forget About the VA Foreign Medical Program (FMP) 🇵🇦

If you’re a U.S. veteran living in Panama, you may be eligible to use the VA Foreign Medical Program (FMP) to receive reimbursement for medical care overseas.

✅ What FMP covers:
The program reimburses treatment for service-connected conditions provided outside the United States. That means if you receive care in Panama for a VA-rated condition

📌 Important things to remember:
• You must be enrolled in FMP before submitting claims
• The care must be related to a service-connected disability
• Many clinics in Panama will direct bill the FMP, for those that don't, you can submit a claim for reimbursement.

Many veterans in Panama successfully use FMP alongside local private insurance or out-of-pocket care to manage their healthcare while living abroad.

🇵🇦 Panama Pensionado Visa – Important Clarification for Veterans

I often get questions from veterans about using VA disability income to qualify for Panama’s Pensionado Visa.

Here is the key point 👇

To qualify based on VA disability, the veteran must generally be:
✅ Rated 100% Permanent & Total (P&T), or
✅ Approved for TDIU (Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability)

Why? Because Panama immigration needs proof that the income is lifetime, stable, and permanent. A standard combined VA rating (for example 70% or 90%) does not automatically demonstrate permanent lifetime entitlement, while 100% P&T or TDIU typically does.

👉 This does not mean veterans below 100% cannot qualify — they may still qualify using other pension, retirement, or guaranteed lifetime income sources.

If you’re unsure about your situation, it’s worth reviewing your VA award letter and confirming whether your benefit is classified as permanent.
