Ngā Rangahautira - Māori Law Students Association VUW

Ngā Rangahautira - Māori Law Students Association VUW Ngā Rangahautira is the Māori Law Student's Association at Victoria University of Wellington.

We provide a support network for Māori tauira at Law School, focusing on manaakitanga and whanaungatanga, and of course getting good grades! Ngā Rangahautira focuses on enhancing the understanding of law amongst Māori students, and continues to provide social, academic, cultural and political activities for tauira. Extra tutorials and study sessions are provided for Māori students and encourage fu

ll understanding of the law whilst protecting the importance of tikanga Māori. Ngā Ranghautira is a group open to students from all stages of their law degrees and helps to bridge the gap between Māori lawyers in the community, and Māori students in study.

E te tī, E te tā

Kua hinga te tōtara haemata, te totara whakahīhī o te wao tapu nui a Tāne Mahuta.

Puna o te kī, whītiki o te kī. Whakaniko o te kupu.

Tītoko o te rangi, whakawhiti o te rā, whakaāio whenua.

Te poutokomanawa o Ngā Rangahautira.

Te mūrau a te tini, te wenerau a te mano.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Moana Jackson.

Moana was an integral part of Ngā Rangahautira, te poutokomanwa me kī, the centre pou, the heart of the whare.

During his time here, he was a member of the group that founded the "Aotearoa Māori Law Students Association", which under Moana's guidance in the late 1980’s, evolved into the current rōpū - Ngā Rangahautira. He continued to support and advocate for Māori in the Law, and Indigenous rights.

He will be lain at his home in Te Waimana for the night, and then returned to his whenua at Matahiwi Marae in Heretaunga/Hastings.

Moana will be greatly missed by past and present tauira. He is an integral and important figure within our university community, law school, and Ngā Rangahautira rōpū.

Moe mai okioki ai e te rangatira. Moe mai rā.

‼️LCC internship and graduate positions‼️

Tēnā rā tātou kātoa✨

Ngā Rangahautira komiti have been working hard with Luke Cunningham Clere, a public prosecution law firm 👀 to formulate an internship programme to provide opportunities to our tauira Māori to gain hands on experience in the legal profession 🧐

WHY YOU SHOULD APPLY?
We know that sometimes working with firms that don’t necessarily work in favour of our people can be very difficult. However, this is the exact reason YOU should apply✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

THE LIVING PĀ – KŌRERO AND PIZZA AT THE HUNTER LOUNGE
The Living Pā represents the extensive redevelopment of Te Herenga Waka Marae into a multipurpose pā, one of the world’s most sustainable buildings, and a landmark for the region. This is a chance to get together while our marae is closed and to hear Prof Rawinia Higgins talk about the project’s vision!
Join Ngāi Tauira at the Hunter Lounge (registration required, you can find the rego link via our linktree) or online (connect via Zoom, registration is not required).
Co-hosted by Āwhina and Ngāi Tauira, this event will be of interest to all Māori students and staff. The kōrero will be particularly useful to first year tauira who haven’t had the chance to learn about the Living Pā.
Tuesday 29 March 2022
Kick-off is at 5pm, arrive earlier (to the Lounge and online) to settle in.
Pizza provided. Purchase your own drink. Registration puts you in the draw for spot prizes
To attend the F2F event you must register so we can manage numbers (a COVID thing) and know how many pizzas to order.
Connecting via Zoom, registration is not required.
Kowheori-19
You know the drill. Wear a mask, keep distances, and if you have a sniffle, stay at home (but join us online if you can).
If we have to cancel the F2F component of this event the Zoom kōrero (4.50pm – 5.30pm) will still proceed.

Kōrero with Māori and Pasifika Lawyers from Simpson Grierson and their experiences!!
Come along this THURSDAY 11am (24 MARCH) on zoom for a kōrero with Māori and Pasifika lawyer on their actual experiences navigating being in a big law firm like Simpson Grierson!
This is different to our other sessions as this is just GENERAL ADVICE as being a Māori lawyer and what comes with that, rather than CV or clerkship stuff, but questions might come in that relate.
Please sign up and ask any pātai to these roia in the register page on bio!

Ngā Rangahautira kōmiti would also like to take this time to extend our manaaki to any tauira that need support during this time! Whether you’re currently isolating, need financial support, or just a good vent, feel free to hit one of our executive members up!!!🤍❤️🖤
