Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa | The Māori Law Society was formally established in 1988. Our visi THRMOA was founded over 30 years ago on the following purposes.

Today, we continue to promote, encourage and act in accordance with these purposes on behalf of our members:

To promote fellowship and mutual support amongst our members;

To identify and respond to the legal needs of Te Ao Māori;

To support and encourage whānau, hapū, iwi, and rohe initiatives;

To promote and conduct research on any issues of relevance to our members and Te Ao Māori;

To promote the representation or appointment of our members on or to bodies, Executives, committees, commissions, judicial fora, tribunals, organisations and the like;

To monitor legislation and promote law reform for Te Ao Māori;

To promote the education of our members in terms of tikanga Māori and Te Ture Pākehā;

To communicate and/or affiliate with other organisations in New Zealand and around the world who promote similar aspirations;

To promote awareness of the roles of our members both generally and specifically;

To pursue these purposes in a manner that is consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi; and

To act in a manner that is consistent with tikanga Māori.

Today Matanuku Mahuika and Isaac Hikaka were appointed King’s Counsel. Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa extends its sincere congratulations on these distinguished appointments.

We’re honoured to welcome Ngarra Murray to Hui-ā-Tau 2026 for the keynote Treaty Making in Victoria.

Ngarra will share reflections on the First Peoples’ Treaty journey in Victoria — from generations of Aboriginal activism through to the negotiation and signing of Australia’s first Treaty.

Her keynote will explore what this journey means for self-determination, Treaty-making and future generations, offering a powerful perspective for our own kōrero here in Aotearoa.

E waimarie ana mātou i a Kodi Minell, rāua ko Tawera Marsh (o McCaw Lewis Lawyers), i a Te Whakahiapō hoki. Nā rātou tēnei kaupapa i hautū, i whakatinanahia. Me mihi hoki ki ngā tauira o Waikato, ngā rōia, tae ake ki ngā kaiwhakawā i tae mai ki te waiata, ki te whakangahau, ki te āwhina i te kaupapa.

Whaea Linda Te Aho, kāore i ārikarika ngā mihi e rere atu nei ki a koe. Mōu i whakamārama mai i te orokohanganga mai o tēnei waiata o tātou, me ngā kupu o roto. Ka rere tonu ngā mihi ki a Hekewaru Nathan i tana kapo ake i te kiriata, ki Te Matatini Enterprises anō hoki i tā rātou tautoko i te kaupapa nei.

He aha te Hawaiki hou ka whakairohia mō tātou te Māori i te ao ture? What future do we want to create for Māori and the law?

Looking beyond the challenges of today, Hawaiki Hou invites us to imagine the future we want to create. In this joint keynote, 𝐉𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 and 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐬 will draw on the themes explored throughout Hui-ā-Tau to share their whakaaro on the future relationship between Māori and the law, the opportunities and challenges ahead, and what the next generation will need to lead that future.
