Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa | The Māori Law Society was formally established in 1988. Our visi THRMOA was founded over 30 years ago on the following purposes.

Today, we continue to promote, encourage and act in accordance with these purposes on behalf of our members:

To promote fellowship and mutual support amongst our members;

To identify and respond to the legal needs of Te Ao Māori;

To support and encourage whānau, hapū, iwi, and rohe initiatives;

To promote and conduct research on any issues of relevance to our members and Te Ao Māori;

To promote the representation or appointment of our members on or to bodies, Executives, committees, commissions, judicial fora, tribunals, organisations and the like;

To monitor legislation and promote law reform for Te Ao Māori;

To promote the education of our members in terms of tikanga Māori and Te Ture Pākehā;

To communicate and/or affiliate with other organisations in New Zealand and around the world who promote similar aspirations;

To promote awareness of the roles of our members both generally and specifically;

To pursue these purposes in a manner that is consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi; and

To act in a manner that is consistent with tikanga Māori.

He kawenata kua whakahoungia ki te whakaū i ngā wawata o Te Hunga Rōia Māori me te New Zealand Law Society, e renarena ai te taukaea i waenganui i ngā hunga e rua nei.

On Monday, we joined the New Zealand Law Society to renew our Memorandum of Understanding - our Kawenata.

Our Tumuaki, Wi Pere Mita, shared a few words about the mātāpono underpinning the MoU and the importance of giving practical effect to those through the way we work together.

The renewed MoU reflects our shared commitment to strengthening the legal profession by advancing outcomes for Māori.

📣 Tāmaki Makaurau Whakawhanaungatanga: Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa ki Tāmaki Makaurau whakawhanaungatanga evening - Monday 14 September at Meredith Connell 📣

Tēnā tātou e te iwi - a call to our Tāmaki-based Hunga members to gather at Meredith Connell, Auckland Central on Monday 14 September from 5:30pm. This is an opportunity to network and connect with old friends and colleagues, meet new people, and listen to inspiring kōrero from Justice Tā Joe Williams (Ngāti Pūkenga, Waitaha, Tapuika) before our Hui-ā-Tau in November. He hokinga mahara, he hokinga whakamuri.
We begin Hui-ā-Tau 2026 by looking back to where it all began.

Deputy Chief Judge Craig Coxhead will join us for Te Whakapapa o Te Hunga Rōia Māori, a reflection on the origins, purpose and evolution of Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa.

The kōrero will explore the circumstances that led to the establishment of Te Hunga, the values that have sustained it, how the landscape for Māori lawyers has changed over time, and the role and relevance of Te Hunga for generations to come.

On Thursday evening, our tauira take the floor for the Negotiation and Moot Finals, putting their advocacy, legal skills and whakaaro into action.

It’s an opportunity for our wider whānau ture to come together, tautoko the next generation and see some of our emerging Māori legal talent in action.

Hui-ā-Tau 2026 is coming to Manukau.

Hei a Noema hui tahi ai tātou ki te wānanga, ki te tuitui i te muka tāngata!

This November, we’ll come together at Due Drop Events Centre, Tāmaki Makaurau, for three days of wānanga, whakawhanaungatanga, connection and celebration.

With the full Hui-ā-Tau programme taking place at one venue, this will be our home from 12–14 November as we gather under this year’s kaupapa:
