Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa | The Māori Law Society was formally established in 1988. Our visi THRMOA was founded over 30 years ago on the following purposes.

Today, we continue to promote, encourage and act in accordance with these purposes on behalf of our members:

To promote fellowship and mutual support amongst our members;

To identify and respond to the legal needs of Te Ao Māori;

To support and encourage whānau, hapū, iwi, and rohe initiatives;

To promote and conduct research on any issues of relevance to our members and Te Ao Māori;

To promo

te the representation or appointment of our members on or to bodies, Executives, committees, commissions, judicial fora, tribunals, organisations and the like;

To monitor legislation and promote law reform for Te Ao Māori;

To promote the education of our members in terms of tikanga Māori and Te Ture Pākehā;

To communicate and/or affiliate with other organisations in New Zealand and around the world who promote similar aspirations;

To promote awareness of the roles of our members both generally and specifically;

To pursue these purposes in a manner that is consistent with Te Tiriti o Waitangi; and

To act in a manner that is consistent with tikanga Māori.

Over the past week our Hunga ki Tāmaki Makaurau gathered at Meredith Connell to listen to an inspiring kōrero from Justice Harvey. We were also joined by Kaiwhakawā Justice Whata and Judge Tepania. It was an awesome night of whakawhanaungatanga between our Kaiwhakawā, rōia and tauira.

E mihi nui ana ki a Kelly Mitchell (Ngāti Mahana) kua whakawhiwhia e ia te karahipi 2025 Borrin Foundation nō Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga. Kelly has been selected to receive the Borrin Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship to pursue a PhD in Law at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. Her research will explore how Māori legal theory can inform the constitutional role of the judiciary within a te Tiriti consistent legal landscape in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

📣 He karanga: Please join our Tāmaki-based Hunga on Tuesday 31 March 2026 from 5:30pm at Meredith Connell. In July 2025, our members gathered for a night of whakawhanaungatanga and listened to inspiring kōrero from Justice Kiri Tahana. This year, we are privileged be joined by ngā kaiwhakawā Justice Layne Harvey (Ngāti Awa, Rongowhakaata, Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Ngāti Kahungunu) and the newly minted Justice Amokura Kawharu (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, Ngāpuhi). E hīkaka ana mātou ki te whakatau i tō tātou Pou Matua hou mō Te Hunga Rōia Māori. Mihi mai ki a Huhana Rolleston, nō Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui.

Huhana has worked alongside hapū and iwi in legal, governance, and strategic leadership roles. She has held senior positions across iwi organisations, legal practice, and Māori-led initiatives, most recently serving as Pou Herenga — Manager, Business Strategy and Governance at TupuOra.

Our team is excited to be working alongside Huhana to advance and progress our aspirations for the Hunga.
