Active Investor Plus (AIP) Visa Changes – Effective April 1 2025

The current complex weighting system for the AIP visa will be replaced with two simplified investment categories:

Investment Categories

1. Growth Category

Requires a minimum investment of $5 million in higher-risk assets.

Eligible investments include direct investments in New Zealand businesses.

Investment must be maintained for at least three years.

The investor must spend at least 21 days in New Zealand.

No English language requirement.

2. Balanced Category

Requires a minimum investment of $10 million in mixed assets, including lower-risk options.

Investment must be maintained for at least five years.

The investor must spend at least 105 days in New Zealand.

No English language requirement.

Eligible Investment Options for the Balanced Category

Managed funds

Bonds (e.g., Government, local government, NZDX-listed bonds)

Listed equities

New property developments (residential, rental, social housing, commercial, industrial, and sensitive land approved by the Overseas Investment Office)

Existing commercial or industrial property developments (including sensitive land as approved by the Overseas Investment Office)

Philanthropy

Direct investments

Time Reduction Incentives

Investors in the Balanced Category can reduce their time-in-New-Zealand requirement by investing more:

$11 million investment β†’ 14-day reduction

$12 million investment β†’ 28-day reduction

$13 million investment β†’ 42-day reduction

These changes aim to simplify the system, expand investment opportunities, and remove barriers such as the English language requirement to attract more investors.
