Yesterday was Angela's last day at Kāhui Legal. It is hard to put into words just how much Angela has meant to our team over the past seven years. Angela joined us as a Law Clerk in 2019 and has spent her entire legal career with us, progressing through as a Solicitor and an Associate. We have seen her grow into an exceptional lawyer, a trusted colleague, and a much-loved member of our whānau.

Angela has made an enormous contribution to our clients, our team, and our communities. Her dedication, compassion, and commitment to the people we serve have left a lasting impact on our firm.

Angela is taking up a new role as Senior In-House Counsel for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei in Auckland. This is a fantastic opportunity and one that is richly deserved. We are very proud of you, e hoa!

On behalf of everyone at Kāhui Legal, we thank you, Angela, for everything you have given to our firm over the past seven years. We wish you and your whānau every success and happiness as you begin this next chapter.

E te uri o Ohomairangi, e tū koe ki te kei o te waka kia pākia koe e ngā ngaru a Tangaroa. Eke panuku tō eke, eke Tangaroa tō eke!

You will always be part of the Kāhui Legal whānau.

Over the next two weeks, Kāhui Legal’s Tara Hauraki (Partner), Abby Hauraki (Associate), and Rhianna Morar (Associate), with barrister Natalie Coates, will attend Hearing Weeks 2 and 3 of the Wai 2700, Mana Wāhine Inquiry.

Kāhui Legal acts for two of the original Wai 381 claimants, Rīpeka Evans and Dr Papaarangi Reid. Filed on 26 July 1993, the Wai 381 claim concerns the exclusion of Dame Mira Szászy from the inaugural Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission. The claimants say that this decision reflected the wider systemic marginalisation of the value, status and role of Māori wāhine in Aotearoa which is inconsistent with the Crown’s obligations under Articles 2 and 3 of Te Tiriti.

The Inquiry examines Crown breaches relating to wāhine Māori across four pou: Rangatiratanga, Whenua, Whakapapa/Whānau, and Whai Rawa. Hearing Weeks 2 and 3 will focus on the Rangatiratanga pou.

Hearing Week 2 will be held at Mōtatau Marae, Mōtatau with Hearing Week 3 held at the Waitangi Tribunal Offices, Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Tēnā tātou,

As we wrap up the past 12 weeks, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of our intern, Savannah Cowan.

During her time with us, Savannah demonstrated professionalism, curiosity, and a strong work ethic, supporting the team across research, drafting, and day to day matters with enthusiasm and care and quickly became a valued part of our Kāhui Legal Whānau.

Savannah's willingness to learn, ask thoughtful questions, and contribute meaningfully did not go unnoticed, and led to her given important mahi such as the RMA reforms review.

We are grateful for the energy and fresh perspective Savannah brought to the team and wish her every success as she continues her legal journey.

E te uri o Ngāpuhi, Ngāruahine, Tainui, me Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, thank you for your hard work and dedication. Your Kāhui Legal Whānau is excited to see what the future holds for you.

Ko te whaea te takere o te waka.
He uri a Sarah nō Te Atiawa o Te waka-a-Māui.

Next week, we welcome back Sarah Miles, who returns to Kāhui Legal from parental leave not only as a new māmā, but also having been admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in June this year.

Sarah started with Kāhui Legal in 2022 as a Kaiāwhina while studying Law at Te Herenga Waka, where she graduated in 2024. Sarah went on parental leave at end of 2024 and welcomed her beautiful pēpi shortly after.

We are looking forward to having Sarah back on board with us in her new role as a lawyer, and hopefully with lots of office pēpi cuddles.

Hoki mai, hoki mai e hoa ki tēnei whānau ōu.
