Recently, we held our Directors’ Function at Saikou, and it was a great evening spent together outside the office.

The night kicked off with a cocktail and dumpling competition before everyone sat down to enjoy dinner. There were some impressive creations (and a bit of friendly rivalry along the way), making it a fun way to connect and celebrate the team.

A big thank you to Saikou for hosting us and for a fantastic evening.

Serena recently headed along to LawFest, New Zealand’s leading legal tech and innovation conference.

It was a great day of learning, with insights into how technology is changing the way legal services are delivered and what that means for both law firms and clients.

We’re always looking for ways to improve how we work and deliver value, so it’s great to see our team out there keeping up with what’s next in the industry.

Last week, Liam took part in the Aoraki Foundation Advisors Challenge Cup (The Generosity Game Show), held at Bullock Restaurant & Bar.

Liam teamed up with Craig from Gressons and Lauren from Timpanys, competing alongside other local professional advisors for the title. While the team finished 3rd equal (out of four teams), they all had a great time, and the night was full of laughs.

It was a fun event bringing together professionals from across the community while supporting the great work of the Aoraki Foundation.

Well done to everyone involved for a fantastic evening.

Some of our team headed along to the ITF World Tennis Tour finals over the weekend, and what a great event it was. With beautiful weather and some nail-biting moments on the court, it made for a fantastic day of tennis.

A huge congratulations to Tennis South Canterbury for bringing high-calibre international tennis like this to our region. It’s fantastic to see events like this attracting great players and supporters to Timaru.

Well done to everyone involved in making it such a successful tournament.

From 1 April 2026, minimum KiwiSaver contributions will increase from 3% to 3.5% for both employees and employers. While the change is still a few weeks away, now is a good time for employers to start preparing.

It’s worth checking your employment agreements to Kiwisaver clauses are up to date, reviewing payroll systems ahead of the increase and understanding how to handle employee requests to temporarily remain on the lower rate. Businesses with younger staff should also be aware of the expanding KiwiSaver obligations for 16 and 17 year olds.

A little preparation now can help avoid confusion later. If you’d like advice on how these changes may affect your business, get in touch and our employment law team can make a time to chat.

Over the coming decades, New Zealand will see the largest transfer of wealth in its history. While most people make a will to look after their whānau, more Kiwis are also thinking about the wider impact they can leave behind.

Including a gift to charity in your will is a simple way to support causes that matter to you. From local community groups to education, health or the environment. Even a small bequest can make a lasting difference.

If you’re thinking about updating your will or exploring how charitable giving can fit into your plans, our team is here to help.

When buying a property, it’s tempting to rely on reports or disclosures provided by the seller or real estate agent, but they don’t always tell the full story.

Vendor supplied reports may be outdated or prepared for someone else, meaning you might not be able to rely on them later on if issues come up. Known defects disclosed before you make an offer can potentially limit your ability to cancel the agreement or seek compensation.

If something doesn’t sit right, it’s worth getting your own report or making sure your agreement includes conditions that protect your ability to obtain finance and insurance.

Before you sign, getting legal advice can help ensure you’re fully informed and protected. Our property law team is here to help guide you through the process.

We had some very special little helpers at the office yesterday, helping us pick out decorations to donate to the Community Christmas Tree. 🎄

It’s been lovely to see the tree filling up with decorations and the support coming together from across our community.
