Final details on changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa have been released, which come into effect on 24 August 2026.

The SMC changes introduce 2 new pathways – the Skilled Work Experience pathway and the Trades and Technician pathway. There are also increased points for New Zealand qualifications.

*Immigration New Zealand News Update* On 20 April 2026, open work visa employment conditions were changed to either allow visa holders to do any work, including self-employment, sole trading or business ownership, or only allow visa holders to work for any employer under an employment agreement or a contract for services.

Open work visa holders cannot employ other people, either directly or through a business they own or operate, provide sexual services or operate or invest in a business of prostitution.

Delighted to have obtained our client’s family member’s medical treatment visitor visa – not an easy visa to get with a lot of evidence required. Changes have been made to immigration rules related to false, misleading, and withheld information It is now sufficient grounds for INZ to decline a residence visa to an applicant if they are satisfied that the applicant, whether personally or through an agent, has submitted false or misleading information or withheld relevant information in a current or previous application.
