Around ten years ago, Ash and Nick sat down at Cornerstone in Bethlehem, and sketched out on a serviette their idea of the perfect law firm.

A law firm built on values.
A law firm that truly put clients at the centre of everything.
A law firm that challenged the stereotypes associated with the legal profession.

In 2022, that idea became a reality.

This month we are proud to celebrate four years of The Firm.

We won’t pretend the journey has been easy. Nothing worthwhile ever is. There have been late nights, tough decisions, and the kind of responsibility that every business owner knows can be all-consuming (while also adding an extra baby to the family).

But what makes us proud isn’t just what we’ve built, it’s who we’ve built it for:

- A legal team we genuinely believe is among the very best in the Bay of Plenty

So, as we turn FOUR, we reiterate our commitment to our clients:

In case you’ve been living under a rock, here are a couple of major law changes coming out of the recent Budget which will impact New Zealand businesses:

1. Investment Boost: Instant 20% Tax Deduction

From 22 May 2025, businesses can claim an upfront 20% tax deduction on the cost of new or imported assets—on top of standard depreciation. That means better cash flow now, not later!
Eligible assets include machinery, equipment, work vehicles, industrial buildings, and more.

2. KiwiSaver: Gradual Rate Hike & Reduced Government Match

From 1 July 2025, the Government's annual contribution has dropped from 50 cents to 25 cents for every dollar you contribute to KiwiSaver.

From 1 April 2026, the default KiwiSaver contribution rate will increase from 3% to 3.5% for both employees and employers.

From 1 April 2028, the default KiwiSaver contribution rate will rise again to 4% for both employees and employers.

The Government has introduced several KiwiSaver changes which will come into effect on 1 July 2025, 1 April 2026 and 1 April 2028.

A proud Tauranga local, Carly grew up in Te Puna and has dedicated her career to providing trusted legal guidance to clients in our community. With her extensive expertise in estate planning, property law, trusts, and commercial law, she consistently demonstrates professionalism and genuine care for her clients.

Carly’s journey in the law began with First Class Honours from the University of Waikato, before being admitted to the bar in 2012. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her young family, travelling, hiking, and giving back as a Trustee of the Wish for Fish Charitable Trust.

Congratulations to our very own Ellie Davenport on her admission to the bar in the Rotorua High Court last Friday!

It was a small admission ceremony, with only seven soon-to-be lawyers being admitted, which meant Justice Layne Harvey had time to chat and mingle afterwards which is rare for a busy High Court Judge.

A special mention goes to Ruby Wollburg for an exceptional performance as Ellie's moving counsel!
